The Grunewald is the largest forest area in the west of Berlin
The forest crossed by lakes is a popular destination for strollers and cyclists. During the time of the Wall, the Grunewald, the largest forest area in the west of the city, was overrun by walkers and cyclists.Today you sometimes forget that you are in the middle of the metropolis. On both sides the Grunewald is surrounded by water: in the west by the Havel, in the east by the chain of lakes. The forest is intersected by the "Avus", the highway built as a race track, and by the parallel railway line. Only at the suburban station Grunewald, at the Hüttenweg, at the Fischerhüttenweg and at the Schlachtensee you can pass under the motorway.
An outstanding infrastructure for cyclists
You can ride a bike along the Havel again and gain passing by taverns and swimming pools with rescue stations. The most striking points are the peninsula Schildhorn with a memorial dedicated to the Slav Duke Jaczo, who hung his shield and horn on a tree and should be converted to Christianity, and the Grunewald tower on Karlsberg. You can reach the small island Lindwerder by embarking on a ferry boat.
Swimming in the lakes in the Grunewald
In the south, a road leads to the island Schwanenwerder, whose banks are not accessible. Already at the transition to the Great Wannsee lures the beach Wannsee, Europe 's largest lake beach, and from here it is not far to the suburban stations Wannsee and Nikolassee.
