Since 2000, Lesewelt Berlin has been organizing reading sessions for children at public institutions in Berlin, such as libraries, schools and day-care facilities.
Goals of Lesewelt
The goal of Lesewelt Berlin e.V. is to awake the joy of reading by reading aloud. Reading skills are closely tied to the desire to read. That is why it is important to motivate the children to read. When adults and children read books together, it not just make them feel curios about stories, but they also enjoy a sense of personal care. So it can bring the girls and boys a nice experience by reading books.
But not only that. By reading aloud, patience, perseverance and concentration will be encouraged. These skills make reading easier at school and thus increase the chances for successfull schooling.
And for children from non-german cultural and linguistic areas Lesewelt's lecture hours are a good opportunity to improve their language skills. Reading out aloud, telling stories and playing together broaden the vocabulary and improve speaking.
Lesewelt - reading hours
Lesewelt's reading lessons take place regularly once a week at public institutions in Berlin such as libraries, schools or day care facilities. A team of volunteer readers is waiting for children every week at the same time and the same place. The readers enjoy reading and interacting with children. They are characterized by patience, reliability, sense of responsibility and continuous volunteer work. The children, at the age between four and twelve years old, visit Lesewelt's lecture hours during their leisure time. A participation is free of charge and after every 10th visit they receive a gift.
Lesewelt - success story
Currently, there are 150 volunteer readers in team engaged at 37 public institutions in Berlin. Since its foundation, more than 150,000 girls and boys have been participating in exciting reading adventures at Lesewelt and more than 10.000 gifts were distributed. And all participants benefit: the reading classes give the children the key qualification "reading", which enables them to succeed in the society.
The readers receive a meaningful task. They appreciate the exchange between adults and kids and they get to know and understand different cultures. And finally, public institutions are also looking forward to a qualified offer for new visitors.
