Once airplanes took off from the grounds that used to be part of Tempelhof Airport. Now, the "Tempelhofer Feld" is a large public park where locals enjoy picnics, sunbathing and doing sports
After the closure of Tempelhof Airport in 2008 the city of Berlin has regained the vast urban space which includes the former terminal building, numerous hangars and the airfield. The 300 hectare field with the two runways was opened as a public park, the "Tempelhofer Feld", in 2010 and has since grown in popularity among residents and visitors alike.
Tempelhofer Feld - an open space for sports and leisure
Tempelhofer Feld is one of the world's largest inner-city parks. An area without any motorised traffic, it offers plenty of space for family outings, recreation and summer barbecues. Berliners love to skate and ride their bikes on the concrete runways, sit in the grass chatting with friends and take their dog for a walk.
The park, located between the districts of Tempelhof, Kreuzberg and Neukölln, can be accessed through three main entrances and seven side entrances at Tempelhofer Damm, Columbiadamm and Oderstraße.
Tempelhof Airport terminal - a venue for concerts and trade shows
The former airport terminal is now a listed building and the venue of larger events such as trade shows, award ceremonies and concerts.
