Sensory play encourages self-directed explorative learning and allows children to use scientific processes to play, investigate and explore
What is Sensory Play?
Sensory Play includes any activity which stimulates your child's senses. Young children use their five senses to explore and make sense of the world around them, and sensory play allows them to refine and stretch their thresholds for various sensory inputs.
Sensory play is great because it can be facilitated anytime and anywhere, however, from planning a theme to preparing the materials to facilitating the play and the cleaning up after, it does take a lot of effort and time.
With the endless chores at home and the myriad of pre-school curriculum to cover, sensory play - despite its obvious benefits - tends to end up in the 'Maybe next time' list.
At Busy Tables, the early childhood educators dedicate time and resources to planning, preparing and conducting sensory play, learning opportunities are injected into every sessions.
Whether you have a toddler who's learning his/her first letter, or a preschooler who you'd like to engage in meaningful activities after school, sensory play is for everyone.
Sensory Toddler Playgroup (Tuesdays - Saturdays 1-3 years old)
Programme outline
- 60 minutes session
- Teacher-facilitated
- Each session exposes the children to a letter or concept of the day
- Adult accompaniment necessary
How the playgroups are conducted typically
- Warm-up: Introductory material, songs, rhymes to get the children settled down and 'briefed' on what to expect for today's session
- Sensory activity 1: The teacher introduces a Sensory Tub with various materials related to the theme/story and letter/fact of the day, activities and games are conducted, digging together into a large sensory tub also works on a child's social skills as they learn to interact with peers who are sharing a common space.
- Sensory activity 2: The teacher follows up with a second sensory tub containing a different material/scene to present a contrasting experience
- Wrap-up/freeplay: The children are left to interact with the sensory tubs in any way they want, this is when their creativity and imagination shines
