We know just how powerful a carefully selected read aloud can be. Picture books can instantly captivate. One of my favorite ways to use read alouds with my students is use them to kick off STEAM Challenges, and over the years, I’ve developed some favorites that I return to again and again for many reasons. They’re perfect for “setting the stage” for a challenge by sparking background knowledge and promoting a healthy sense of growth mindset.

1. The Recess Queen

In this sassy playground romp the irrepressible new kid dethrones the reigning recess bully by doing the unthinkable — she invites her to be her friend!

Challenge: We will be building a working Paper playground

2. IQBAL AND HIS INGENIOUS IDEA

Is a story about a young boy who resides in Bangladesh who comes up with an idea to build a working solar cooker

Challenge: Building a Working Solar Cooker

3. Room on the Broom

A very funny story of quick wits and friendship of a witch.

Challenge: Make a fizzy Magical Potion.

4. After The Fall

Everyone knows that when Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. But what happened after?

Challenge: Build Parachute and Planes

5. What to do with a Box?

If you give a child a box, who can tell what will happen next?

Challenge: Build a Car Wash

What to Prepare ( materials are vary for each session, please refer to the session you will attend)

A. The Recess Queen

We will be building "Paper Playground" by learning the principles of simple machines.

Materials needed are.
1. Thick Cardboard sheets
2. Cardboard Tissue rolls (optional)
3. Coloured paper (optional)
4. Popsicle sticks (optional)
5. Thick Thread
6. glue
7. Scissors
8. Double sided tape / Cellophane tape
9. Paint (optional)

B. After Fall

We will be building a parachute to help Humpty Dumpty to land easily. By learning principles of Aerodynamics..
1. Plastic grocery bag (Color doesn't matter)
2. Thread
3. Figurine toy
4. Cellophane tape
For Airplane
5. Straw
6. White Paper or coloured paper

C. Iqbal and his Ingenious Idea

Like Iqbal we will build a Solar cooker and learn about solar energy.
1. Cardboard Pizza box or any cardboard box with lid
2. Black paper
3. Aluminium foil
4. Plastic wrap
5. Cellophane tape
6. Scissors

D. Room on the Broom

We will try a Magical potion using a Magical spell and learn about states of matter: solid, liquid and gas.
1. Cauldron/ A large container preferably transparent
2. Vinegar
3. Baking Soda
4. Flowers, twigs, sticks, colors (optional)

E. What to do with a box?

We will learn about shapes and sizes. And build a car wash.
1. Cardboard Box
2. Colored paper
3. Scissors
4. Glue
5. Cars to play with (optional)

  • Date: Every Wed/Sat from 6 May to 6 Jun, 4pm ( different book weekly)
  • Duration: 40 mins
  • Small group learning. Limit to 8 families only.

About Host

I am a Robotics teacher turned SAHM. I love to teach and my son loves to learn. We have been doing a lot of sensory and STEAM based activities since he was 8months. I loved the idea of this group. I want to use this medium to share what we do with all and also learn from them.
