Animals We Love: Komodo Dragons
The Komodo dragon is the world’s largest living lizard. Found only on five Indonesian islands, including Komodo Island, this threatened reptile is one of Indonesia’s national treasures.
It is locally known as ora or buaja daret meaning ‘land crocodile’. Komodo dragons are difficult to breed under human care.
One of the challenges, similar to that for many reptiles, is the difficulty of telling males from females without DNA tests or ultrasound scans.
We celebrated our first-ever hatching in 2009, after 34 years of caring for Komodo dragons. Mario is the first Komodo dragon successfully bred in Asia, outside of Indonesia. Currently, Singapore Zoo is home to three Komodo dragons – Bima and his two sons, Mario and Taro.
Love Komodo dragons? We have prepared a learning kit jam-packed with activities you can do with your kids.

Animals We Love: Orangutans
Orangutans are apes. The word ‘orangutan’ means ‘man of the forest’ in Malay. Here in Singapore Zoo, you are likely to see orangutans swinging amongst play structures or having fun with a gunny sack.
In this video, we feature Merlin the orangutan. Merlin was born on 8th October 2004 and his favourite fruit is durian. He was named after the grandson of Jane Goodall, a famous primatologist who visited Singapore Zoo a few weeks after he was born.
