Mizuno Singapore will be staging the third edition of the Mizuno Ekiden Run after more than 4,000 runners took part last year.
This year, the race, which is a relay-styled long distance run, will land at The Promontory @ Marina Bay on 19 August, 4pm.
In Japanese terms, Ekiden refers to a relay-styled long distance running and that is exactly how the Mizuno Ekiden 2017 will work. Runners are set to compete against the clock whilst unlocking milestones as they transmit from one station to the next within a specific time.
Building on individual perseverance and teamwork as well as focusing on high performance, each transitional point brings runners and the community together in discovering, and reigniting the Japanese culture and spirit along the race route.
Runners can then look forward to a Matsuri inspired festival that showcases different Japanese foods, games and cultural activities after their run.
Mizuno Ekiden 2017 Announces New Competitive Category To Attract Local And Overseas Running Teams
This year, there will be a new category, the Running Club category, for running groups who have been active for at least three months. All team members must be residents or permanent residents of any ASEAN country.
Capping the capacity at 5,000 runners, this year’s race targets an increased participation from regional countries with the introduction of the ‘Running Club Category’. This new category aims to provide a platform for competitive running teams in Asia to sign up in teams of four and race towards the top prize of S$2,200 worth of cash and vouchers.
Race as four. Race as one
Runners will participate in teams of four where the first runners of each team will flag off while donning a traditional tasuki sash. Upon completing his or her leg of the relay, the sash will be passed to the second runner who will be waiting at the transition area. This process will continue until the sash is donned by the fourth runner, who will then finish the race and join the rest of his or her team members at the finish line.
The Mizuno Ekiden 2017 strives to spur runners to display remarkable performance in intense and challenging situations while fostering friendship and showcasing commendable Japanese values such as perseverance, resilience and teamwork.
Runners can register in teams of four across four categories; the Open Category (42.195km), the Open Category (21.1km), the Corporate category (21.1km), and the newest category in 2017, the Running Club category. Winning teams can look forward to beating the timings set by past years’ champions as well as receiving prizes for their respective categories.
At the end of the Race, all runners, together with members of the public, will be treated to a wide array of traditional and popular Japanese gourmet such as sushi, ramen, and desserts at the Matsuri Race Village. Completing the Matsuri Race Village will be a string of Japanese activities and performances lined up for all attendees to enjoy and appreciate an evening of all things Japanese. Entry to the Matsuri Race Village is free. Matsuri refers to a festival or a holiday in the Japanese context.
