Our Backyard

Many children know nature, but are they in and with nature?

As a child, I loved mimosas. I’d touch and observe its leaflets fold inwards and then stood by, waiting for its leaflets to unfold. But before it could happen, butterflies would appear and I’d race home to get a clear container to catch them.

The words smartphones and apps were not in my childhood dictionary. It would be naive to hope that the pendulum would swing back to a time where digital technology was absent. Instead, we as parents have to play the role of a cheerleader for outdoor play. And here’s why.

To a child, the natural world is full of wonder and excitement. Through outdoor play and exploration, comes a desire for knowledge and gives real meaning to the facts of natural science.

I believe children can learn and grow better in the healthiest classroom of all – nature.  Let them play freely. Dig dirt, kick leaves, splash puddles. And if anyone asked why, the answer is as simple as it is obvious “Because fresh air is good for you”.
