To provide quality preschool education and life skills in a joyful, nurturing and stimulating environment.
Totsville Montessori was incorporated in 2009 as an Enrichment Centre in the heartlands of Bishan with a humble intention to create natural learning opportunities in a homely and cozy environment. Totsville Montessori currently has 3 Kindergartens and 2 Enrichment Centres, and will continue to grow from strength to strength.
At Totsville Montessori , they strongly believe that every child learns at his or her own pace. Therefore, their curriculum is uniquely designed to cater to each individual child’s needs. Following the philosophy of Maria Montessori, Totsville Montessori adopts the hands-on learning approach and one-on-one teaching approach using concrete as well as abstract methods.
Their carefully prepared environment is designed to complement the activities and encourage the participation of children. All their classrooms are well equipped and ever ready for a child’s learning; allowing them to explore and express themselves freely. With an open door communication practice, strong parent and school partnership and a team of dedicated principals and teachers, Totsville Montessori stands firm in preparing each individual child with education and life skills for primary one and beyond.
Montessori curriculum is non-graded and non-competitive, thus allowing the children to work and grow in an environment that permits their individual potential to reach its own level and at its own pace, without any negative or judgmental pressure. Their Montessori area is filled with apparatus that support systematic, interactive and purposeful work.
- Practical Life - A range of activities that help to develop a sense of order, eye-hand coordination, fine motor skills, concentration span while nurturing good social habits and etiquette. Everyday life activities like pouring, spooning and transferring would seem simple to adults. But when children perform these activities, they unconsciously improve their control of movement and hand-eye coordination that form the basis for writing and cognitive skills. Most importantly, they grow to be independent and confident.
- Sensorial - A range of graded apparatus to help develop and refine the five senses. Children learn best by exploring materials not only with their hands but by using their five senses (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory & gustatory). Sensorial materials and activities are designed for awareness to colour, form, texture, size, weight, sound, smell and dimensions. Children develop skills such as ability to order, classify, differentiation, independent judgement, estimations, perception and describe sensory impressions.
- Mathematics - Mathematics shelves are filled with manipulative materials that help the child explore and learn concepts of number, symbol, sequence, operations and memorisation of basic facts. Through a series of carefully structured didactic materials, children first pick up basic concepts through concrete activities and they progress to understand more advanced, abstract concepts, mental calculations and problem sums.
- Language - The children learn to read through a series of Montessori exercises and activities. In the first stage, they learn phonic sounds through various fun activities, recognizing and associating letters with phonic sounds. They then start reading, building and blending words and eventually progress to Consonant Digraphs and Vowel Digraphs. The last stage of reading is the introduction to Early Grammar, Comprehension and Creative Writing.
- Cultural - Cultural Studies provide the foundation for children to learn about the world around them. Enjoyable hands-on activities create an awareness and interest in botany, biology, zoology, geography, and history.
- Learn through Play - Play is the most important element in their programs. Using “Learn through Play” teaching philosophy, children truly enjoy the learning process. Through play, children learn about their world, themselves, and others. They are able to develop skills such as independence, resourcefulness, curiosity, creativity and responsibility. Play is a child’s work!
- Misic and Movement - Their curriculum also includes music and movement sessions during which the children participate in singing, dancing, playing instruments, and dramatic play.
- Creative Art - Children are encouraged to develop their imagination and ability to communicate and express ideas and feelings in creative ways through painting, colouring, collage, play dough, clay, etc.
- Show Tell - Show and tell isn’t just about giving the kids a reason to bringing toys to class; each child’s social, emotional and language skills will grow and develop from this activity as the children learn to use descriptive language, practice listening skills and share their special items with others. Sharing prized possessions with peers makes for a fun and comfortable learning arena for everyone involved.
- Story Telling Session - Stories not only strengthen the child’s understanding of language and serve as a vital aspect of the national curriculum for English, they also stimulate the brain in other areas and are of fundamental importance in child development.
- Physical Development - Physical activity is vital for a child’s development and lays the foundation for a healthy and active life.
- Field Trip and Nature Wolks - Regular field trips and nature walks to enhance children’s learning beyond the classroom.
