ArtScience on Screen: Dare To Be Fearless

Join us for ArtScience on Screen: Dare To...; a film program celebrating diverse daredevils from Disney animation, all brought together by their decision to dare.

Those who dared to see how far they could go, those who dared to never leave anyone behind and those who looked at the big, wide world and dared!

Driven by the supportive relationship between two sisters as they cope with the aftermath of losing both their parents. Younger sister Lilo showcases a strong sense of identity and refusal to conform as she comes to terms with the realities of losing people and her fear of further abandonment while older sister Nani adapts to her new role as primary caregiver through utilising her strong work ethic and by marrying her fiery nature with a developing maternal nature.

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

  • 9, 11 Jan
  • 10am, 11.45am, 1.30pm, 3.15pm, 5pm

Disney’s return to its classical animation style also offered something incredibly modern, Disney’s first African American Princess. Tiana acts as a thoroughly modern Disney Princess who achieved her happily ever after through a strong work ethic and refusal to bow to the many, unjust, obstacles placed in front of her- opposed to utilising magic, assistance or just waiting for a prince.

Zootopia (2016)

  • 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm

During Zootopia, Judy Hopps doesn’t only overcome the many prejudices and assumptions made about her being a cute bunny, but she also overcomes her own prejudices. Upon realising her own ambitions- she starts to understand how her own unconscious bias about predators are harmful and proceeds to takes steps to better herself.
