The second season of the 'Seeing the Invisible' augmented reality art exhibition will come to Gardens by the Bay on October 12 this year.
Gardens by the Bay is the only garden in Asia among the 10 gardens around the world where this unique showcase will take place.
Seeing the Invisible at Gardens by the Bay features augmented reality works by 12 international artists including Ai Weiwei, Refik Anadol, El Anatsui, Isaac Julien CBE RA, Mohammed Kazem, Sigalit Landau, Sarah Meyohas, Pamela Rosenkranz and Timur Si-Qin.
Engage with ‘Seeing the Invisible’ via an app designed for the exhibition that can be downloaded on smartphones and tablets, to view artworks through their devices and even interact with some of the pieces.
The augmented reality nature of the exhibition allows for the creation of expansive, immersive works that engage with existing features of the natural landscape beyond the limitations of what is possible with physical artworks. Many of the works created for the exhibition will address themes revolving around nature, the environment and sustainability, as well as explore the interplay of the physical world with the digital one.
Artwork highlights for ‘Seeing the Invisible’ include:
An adaptation of one of El Anatsui’s iconic recycled bottle-top installations into an augmented reality tapestry that shimmers gently as though moved by a soft wind – a first foray into augmented reality for the artist.
A new work by Sigalit Landau offering the viewer endless routes of investigation both around and inside the hidden creeks of a work inspired by the natural formation of a salt stalagmite, also a first venture into augmented reality for the artist.
A meticulous translation of Ai Weiwei’s Gilded Cage into augmented reality, addressing issues related to power structures, habitats, borders, confinement, and restriction, but also caregiving, preservation, and nurturing.
‘Seeing the Invisible’ is the first exhibition of its kind to be developed as a joint venture among botanical gardens around the world and is initiated by Hannah Rendell, Executive Director at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens and Candida Gertler, co-founder of Outset Contemporary Art Fund with the support of The Jerusalem Foundations Innovation Fund. The exhibition is co-curated by Hadas Maor and Tal Michael Haring.
This exhibition can be viewed only upon visiting the participating botanical gardens, and is experienced through the Seeing the Invisible mobile app developed for this project. Please download the app prior to your visit to the Gardens to experience the exhibition.
