Decoding the Teenage Years

“Decoding the Teenage Years” is a webinar targeted to parents, teachers and guardians about the psychological needs of tweens and teenagers, especially in this day and age. The “New Age” challenges faced by youth, such as a rapidly evolving digital environment (technology and social media), can be all-consuming. What can we do to keep our children safe? Our esteemed speaker, Clinical Psychologist Dr Carol Balhetchet, will share common anxieties amongst teens and share practical tips and strategies for effective communication.

About the Speaker - Dr Carol Balhetchet
Dr Carol Balhetchet has spent more than 20 years with the social service sector, schools and the private sector, counselling and caring for troubled or at-risk children and teens, many of whom are both misunderstood and vulnerable. A familiar name on national television and radio, she has been discussing delinquency issues since 1997, and has also contributed numerous articles on the subject of youth-at-risk to newspapers and magazines.

In her 2018 book, Dr Delinquent: A Guide To Decoding The Teenage Years, published by Straits Times Press, Dr Carol uses a collection of real-life stories to decode and identify the issues underlying teenage behaviour, looking at the factors that build up and come to a head. Young people reading this book will get a better understanding into why they feel the way they do, while parents will see a bit of themselves, if not a lot, in the kinds of behaviour Dr Carol describes.

Dr Carol has a Master of Social Science in Counselling Psychology and a Ph.D. Transdisciplinary (Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Social Psychology and Anthropology) from Central Queensland University. In 2014, as a Tote Board scholar, she attended a course on Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management at Harvard Business School.
