Have your babies and kids celebrate our Na4on’s 58th birthday decked out in vibrant and playful prints featuring Singapore’s beloved Otters, Hornbills and Macaques!
In conjunction with National Day this year, homegrown baby and children’s wear label Mouses & Birds has partnered with artist, architect, former Executive Director of DesignSingapore, and all-round creative guy Mark Wee to come up with two special-edition prints.
Celebrating our local biodiversity, the joyous and colourful prints feature plants and animals that can be found all around our little island. The Marine Otter print shines the spotlight on the swimming antics of the adorable and spirited critter that has become recognized as one of Singapore’s unofficial mascots.
Taking centre stage in the Tropical Forest print are plants and animals that can be found in our parks and nature reserves, such as Long-Tailed Macaques, Hornbills, Banana Trees and Bird’s Nest Ferns. The print also features the rare Raffles’ Banded Langur, a native monkey species which is critically endangered in Singapore[1].
“We’re so excited to be unveiling the Mouses & Birds X Mark Wee Wild About Singapore! collaborative collection! The Mouses & Birds brand is all about art and imagination. We create beautiful, hand-illustrated prints often inspired by the natural world. When Mark and I met up a few months back to explore the possibilities of a collaboration, things just clicked because his art style is so childlike and quirky! How it worked was that Mark would create these wonderful illustrations of what we felt were good representations of local plants and animals. He’d then send them over to me, and I’d respond to his artwork by imagining how they would interact with and play off each other, weaving them together. Through our collective effort and imagination, the Tropical Forest and Marine Otter prints are stories in themselves that we want to tell, in an ode to our beloved Singapore,” says Amanda Mok, Founder and Designer at Mouses & Birds.
“I’ve done my artwork for many years on the sidelines of my professional career as an architect, designer, and public servant. My art has always captured a childlike wonder of the world around me, alongside a quirkier imaginary one. It was Design Orchard that introduced me to Amanda, as they are keen to catalyze more collaborations among artists and Singaporean labels. I felt that Amanda’s philosophy for Mouses & Birds about encouraging play and imagination in children resonated with my own work and its basis of inspiration. Her own professional training as an artist also made her a wonderful collaborator as she understood artists, being one herself. Inspired by some of my earlier artworks of Singapore’s tropical forests, we created the Wild About Singapore! collection featuring both forest and marine life, and a cast of well-loved animals Singaporeans are familiar with. We want to celebrate the wonderful natural habitats that we are so blessed to have in Singapore, an island surrounded by water and filled with trees,” says Mark Wee.
Wild About Singapore! is launching with apparel styles including Short-Sleeved Bodysuits, Sleeveless Bodysuits, Sleeveless Boyshort Rompers, T-Shirts, and Sleeveless Tank Tops, in a size range of 3 months to 8 years old. Created with both indoor and outdoor play situations in mind, the collection is made from soft, comfy, and breathable 100% cotton interlock. Interlock is a durable double-knit jersey fabric that ensures that your babies’ and kids’ clothing continue to stay in shape even after lots of playdates and multiple washes!
The collection will be available online at mousesandbirds.com and Design Orchard from 3 August 2023.
