Light to Night 2020: Invisible Cities

Light to Night 2020: Invisible Cities

The Light to Night Festival returns in January 2020!

For two weeks, art will extend beyond the walls of the Civic District's cultural institutions into the precinct's public spaces, transforming them with light, sound and movement.

Art, innovation and inspiring ideas intersect in this marquee event of Singapore Art Week. This fourth edition of the Festival is based on the theme Invisible Cities. The array of programmes—which span from day to night—draws us into the rich imaginary worlds of artists, writers, musicians, designers, filmmakers, performers and many other creative talents.

Light to Night Festival will be celebrated across five of the Civic District’s most iconic cultural institutions: National Gallery Singapore, Asian Civilisations Museum, The Arts House, Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall and Esplanade–Theatres on the Bay.

  • Floating City

Be awed by the sublime cityscape within the Padang Atrium. Ethereal towers made of string and suspended at different heights resemble skyscrapers. They are lit from within, creating a glowing city while illuminating this grand space. This artwork is the first suspended installation in the Gallery’s Padang Atrium.

  • Optical Maze

This installation is a colourful pavilion by day, and illuminated labyrinth by night. When the sun sets, it transforms into a maze with playful lighted walkways that change colour in response to visitors. This installation restores the Padang to its original intended use as a recreational civic space.

  • True Lies – Secrets of the Gallery

Can you solve a decades-old mystery and locate the items stolen from the time capsule buried beneath the Gallery’s foundations? Put on your thinking cap and your running shoes for this escape game, which will have you searching for clues all over the Gallery’s Supreme Court Wing.

  • Art Skins on Monuments – City States of Mind

City States of Mind will transform the Civic District into a constellation of imaginary cities. Eight projections, mapped onto the district’s majestic monuments, manifest the imagined dreams, forgotten memories and deep desires hidden within each of them.

  • Between Two Worlds

This passageway of mirrored pools explores the themes of memory, displacement and longing. With its reflective surfaces, the work seems to dissolve into its surroundings, forcing participants to confront themselves and the idea that reality is often multi-faceted and fragmented.

  • Art x Social

Hungry? Mark your calendars for Art X Social, happening from 10–11 Jan and 17–18 Jan 2020! The roads in the Civic District will be closed to create the ultimate food street.

  • Clement Space

Clement Space is an immersive experience offering intimate reflections from the rich tapestry of the artist’s own autistic senses, welcoming all into a personal sensory wonderland where curious engagement, safe respite and peaceful restoration co-exist in delicate, tranquil balance.

Programme timings and admission charges may vary.
