A long time ago, a fearsome creature named Nian would appear each year, frightening an entire village.
In this retelling, the story is seen through the eyes of Mei, a curious and brave little girl who is learning how to face her fears.
Instead of facing Nian alone, Mei asks for help and works together with the people around her. By sharing ideas and supporting one another, they discover that loud sounds and the colour red can scare Nian away. Mei’s story reminds young audiences that it is okay to feel afraid, that asking for help is important, and that working together can turn fear into confidence and celebration.
Through this performance, children will:
• Develop an appreciation for traditional Chinese music and the art of storytelling.
• Discover the classic Chinese New Year story, The Legend of Nian and learn how traditions such as the Lion Dance came about.
• Learn that bravery and helping one another can help when facing fears, and develop confidence
