Summer 2017 Holiday Writing Workshops (Age 8-10)

Summer 2017 Holiday Writing Workshops (Age 8-10)

  • ECP x Press Start -- Breaking News: King of Hong Kong (Ages 8-11)

The scoop is that monsters are headed to Hong Kong, but the who-what-when-where-and-why remain to be seen. Students will create their own monster characters to play “King of Hong Kong”, a board game custom-designed by Press Start Hong Kong for this unique 3-day writing workshop. As the game progresses, our young reporters will track the monsters' journey through Hong Kong and learn how to write breaking news reports and in-depth feature articles, including interviews with 'experts' and eyewitnesses. Finally, their articles will be published in a special edition newspaper covering the monsters' invasion of Hong Kong!

  • ECP x Press Start: Deep Sea Adventure (Ages 8-11)

Mermaids, treasure, hidden caves and amazing underwater creatures. The deep sea will inspire students in our newest collaboration with Press Start Hong Kong where students both write to play and play to write. Each of these 1-day workshops will feature different types of writing as students play a customised version of the board game "Deep Sea Adventure".  On some days, students will be designing and writing about characters, objects and settings as components for use in the game, while on other days, students will be playing the game and writing stories about what happens on their deep sea adventures. Each component that gets created in these workshops, including those in our Informational Writing: Sea Creatures workshop, will become a permanent part of ECP's Deep Sea Adventure game set.

The Deep Sea Adventure series of workshops will run Mon-Wed-Fri. Students can sign up for just one day, or all three!

  • Mon: Deep Sea Destinations
  • Wed: Underwater Mission
  • Fri: The Great Escape

  • Spelling Detectives

People love to complain that there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the English spelling system, but there are, in fact, clearly defined patterns and 'laws' which govern the English spelling system. In this spelling workshop, students will take an investigative approach to spelling. Rather than a list of words to memorise or a review of phonics, students will learn to explore common spelling patterns, how words are formed, and why words are spelled the way they are! Students will then do a short piece of writing to apply their newfound spelling knowledge. The concepts covered are not included in most school spelling lessons, so even ‘good’ spellers will learn something new. Also, the material covered in each week will be different, so students can sign up for one week or more!

This summer's informational writing workshop will open students’ eyes to the incredible world of sea creatures and challenge them to present information in a fun and engaging way. Students will each research and write about a sea creature of their choice, and collectively produce a guide and info cards that highlight the most amazing and bizarre facts about different underwater species. A unique feature of this workshop is that the guide and info cards created in this workshop will then be used for the ECP x Press Start Deep Sea Adventure Game & Writing workshops also offered this summer.
