Lee Tung Avenue is hosting one of the hottest dance parties in town this winter!
Starting from 17 November 2022, a giant mirror ball measuring 7 metres in diameter will be dangling above the Central Piazza, complemented by professional stage lighting to transform the shopping street into a retro disco, while the tree-lined walkway will be adorned with sparkling sequins. The public can dance to catchy disco hits from the 1970s and 80s and relive the glitz and glamour of the golden disco era.
Younger folks can also appreciate golden hits in the first-ever “LTA DISCO Dance Contest” for tertiary students, organised by Lee Tung Avenue as part of its ongoing effort to promote young people’s creativity and arts development. While paying tribute to the legends of the 1970s, the contest will invite young dancers to reinterpret the viral disco dance of yesteryear with new grooves.
- A Giant Mirror Ball Shining on Lee Tung Avenue from 17 November
Classic disco hits, vintage fashion, roller skates, and even cassettes have made a comeback in recent years. Riding on the trend, Lee Tung Avenue has chosen a nostalgic 70s disco theme for its upcoming Christmas campaign to bring everyone a glitzy and glamorous outdoor experience.
The disco culture reached its peak in the 1970s and 80s. Even today, many disco classics are kept alive as new generations of artists perform and reinterpret them. In fact, disco music has a profound influence on pop music. When it comes to disco, the mirror ball has got to be the most iconic symbol. This is why Lee Tung Avenue has created a disco ball measuring 7 metres in diameter, covered in over 2,000 mirrors and topped with Christmas decorations to recreate the best disco experience ever. The giant disco ball, accompanied by professional stage lighting, will glitter with brilliant bright colours to drum up the party atmosphere and get everyone jiving on the dancefloor. Better still, the entire Lee Tung Avenue will sparkle with scattered sequins reminiscent of 70s fashion, easily making the shopping street the most photogenic spot in town and the number one choice for Christmas gatherings.
A simple but grand lighting ceremony will be held in the evening of 17 November to kick off a series of festive events. Students of Dance Union, a dance school founded by renowned dance director Sunny Wong, will perform disco dances. There will also be DJs spinning tracks from the 1970s and 80s. Over the next month, half-hourly "Disco Fever" sessions will take place every day from 6pm to 9:30pm, during which an exhilarating playlist compiled by Lee Tung Avenue featuring some of the best known disco hits and Christmas pop songs will be played, alongside stunning stage lighting effects, to bring out everyone’s dance instinct.
- LTA DISCO Dance Contest for Tertiary Students
Lee Tung Avenue has long been supporting the arts development of young people. The “LTA DISCO Dance Contest”, held under the Christmas campaign, aims to provide a platform for young dance enthusiasts to perform and exchange with one another. The finalists of the dance contest will be asked to unleash their creativity by incorporating elements of 70s disco music or dance into their own dance genres to create a refreshing blend of old and new.
During the rehearsal, some of the finalists revealed that it was the contest that introduced them to 70s dance music, which they found to have much richer layers than they had imagined. One of them said: “Due to the epidemic, student dancers have had very few performance opportunities. We are grateful to Lee Tung Avenue for providing university and college student dancers with a platform to shine. We look forward to being on the stage again.”
The dance contest final will be held in the afternoon of 10 December, with 10 teams from different tertiary institutions reinterpreting and bringing the golden era of disco back to life.
- Share Photos of Sparkly 70s Outfits on Social Media to Win Prizes
The 70s jukebox musical “Saturday Night Fever” had led to a worldwide disco frenzy, and John Travolta’s dance pose – arm stretched out with a finger pointing towards the sky – is probably one of the most iconic ever. The public is invited to dress up in sparkling disco-themed outfits and strike this very pose for a photo at Lee Tung Avenue, or record a video of their own dance moves under the giant mirror ball, and then upload either the photo or the video clip to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #LTAXMAS (the post / account must be set to public). Each week, 3 winners will be selected and each will receive HK$100 in the form of Lee Tung Avenue cash discount coupons (one HK$50 shopping coupon plus one HK$50 dinning coupon).
