Make Your Own 3D Printed Snowflake Ball Workshop

Make Your Own 3D Printed Snowflake Ball Workshop

Participants will bring home two snowflake balls - one with an electronic candle inside and the other a cycling LED.

Created with simplicity and a mathematical structure in mind, Paul Draghicescu constructed a lovely icosahedron by 20 interlocking snowflakes and won the Thingiverse's 3D design contest in December 2013.

After making the 20-piece snowflake balls, we will delve into the various Platonic Solids and the Euler's (Polyhedron) Formula. And try to appreciate how this simple but elegant construction can be transformed from either an icosahedron or a dodecahedron. Don't worry! There is no hard mathematical theories or proofs but fun observations.

Main Takeaways:

  • Two balls pieced together using 3D printed snowflakes.
  • Appreciation of Platonic solids.
  • Appreciation of Euler's formula.
  • Some mental wrestling with geometric transformations.
