Dont miss the Summer of Classics 2023 at Cinema Akil
Martin Scorsese and several other leading filmmakers founded, in 1990, The Film Foundation: a non-profit organization dedicated to film preservation and the exhibition of restored and classic cinema. The World Cinema Project soon emerges in order to preserve and restore neglected films from around the world including Africa and the Middle East. Scorsese’s commitment to film preservation inspired the selection of this year’s Summer of Classics, a careful curation of classics from Lebanon, Senegal, France, India, the US and Germany.
Scorsese himself pushed for the restoration of Mandabi (1968) by Ousmane Sembène, the first feature made in the Wolof language. Divided between the African continent and Japan, the experimental documentary Sans Soleil (1982) directed by Chris Marker pays tribute to a peculiar collage-like filmmaking, closer to poetry than storytelling.
Female friendship is very much present in this year’s selection: with the cult classic Thelma & Louise (1991) from awarded filmmaker Ridley Scott in its new restoration and Once Upon A Time: Beirut, the History of a Star (1995) by Lebanese director Jocelyne Saab.
Summer of Classics also features two films from Hollywood’s most elegant and sophisticated director, Ernst Lubitsch with a milestone of his silent era, The Doll (1919), and from his comedies of manners the exquisite To Be or Not to Be (1942).
From India’s most prestigious filmmaker Satyajit Ray, The Coward (1965) tells the story of a young writer who finds himself unexpectedly reunited with his now-married former lover.
Finally, how could we do without a colorful musical comedy classic for our summer program? John Waters’ most commercially successful film Hairspray (1982), set in Baltimore, is the subversive and high-camp fiction we need to get back our rebellious teenagers’ spirit and fight racial discrimination.

TRAVEL BY CAR
From Sheikh Zayed Road, take the Al Manara exit (Exit 43) into Al Quoz. Go straight on Al Manara Street until you reach the traffic light facing Home Centre. At this junction, turn right. Continue straight then turn right onto 17th Street, before the Avenue. At the end of the road, turn left onto 6A Street for parking.
