Ancient heroes from the Islamic world and China
Cultures have more in common than we know. Inspired by our new exhibition Dragon and Phoenix, we will be screening a series of films for the whole family around the long history of cultural exchange between the Islamic world and China, bringing ancient myths and legends to life.
On 19 November, 26 November, and 10 December, we will show short films, a multi-cultural collection of folktales from around the world, followed by different feature films every week - The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven, Bilal: A New Breed of Hero, and Raya and the Last Dragon. Discover how the spirit of adventure can conquer adversity and help us discover our inner hero.

Watch three short films played on a loop throughout the afternoon. The Crown and the Sceptre, Shepherd Boy Tumur, and Pondi & Ponda, are a rich collection of folktales from around the world. The series was born from a simple idea: no nation is poor in stories, and we are all enriched by sharing them.
1. The Crown and the Sceptre (Arabia)

When a beggar is richly rewarded by another tribe, all of the townspeople wonder why. After he shares the story of his encounter with their king, a local merchant, motivated by wealth, decides that he will do the same. Travel through the culture and traditions of the Arabian Peninsula with the captivating animations of this moral folktale.
2. Shepherd Boy Tumur (Mongolia)

A nomadic kingdom in the Mongolian province is left without an heir to the throne.
The royal astrologer prophecies that the new Khan will arrive at the kingdom riding on a tiger, clutching a python in his right hand. Discover how Tumur, a shepherd boy, became the wisest ruler of the nomadic kingdom.
3. Pondi & Ponda (Pakistan)

Two weaver birds named Pondi & Ponda live happily in the forest until their lives are disrupted by a mysterious monarch known as the Raja who captures Pondi after hearing her beautiful singing. The Raja insists that Pondi should be kept in his palace so he can enjoy her singing. Will Ponda be able to rescue Pondi?
