Join us every weekend until the end of June for a free art making activity for families.
Anchored around object-based learning, these sessions begin in the gallery exploring works from the museum’s collection, and are followed by a hands-on, creative making activity.
8-Week Activity Cycle (repeats until end of June):
-
Make an Aluminium Foil Relief 28-29 March
Food is universally known for bringing people together. This session is inspired by the artwork Food for Thought by artist Maha Mulluh, and the way in which communities are brought closer by shared meals and stories. Participants will learn how to create an aluminium foil relief that encapsulates their memories, feelings, or family stories.
- Picasso Inspired Family Portraits 4-5 April
This session is inspired by the artworks currently on show in the exhibition Picasso, the Figure. After exploring Picasso’s own representations of family and loved ones, participants will be invited to create outlines of their family members on transparent sheets which can then be transferred onto paper to create their own family portrait.
- Make an Aluminium Foil Coin 11-12 April
Learn how to create your own memento coin using an aluminium foil leaf. During the session, you will be inspired by notable artefacts from the museum’s own coin collection, including the coin from Dinar of the Reign of Harun al-Rashid, Solidus of the Reign of Tiberius III, and the Circular Coin from China.
- Design a Travel Journal or Postcard 18-19 April
This travel themed session will centre on Paul Klee’s artwork Oriental Bliss. Participants will be invited to reflect on their favourite travelling stories and create their own postcards or travel journals inspired by the artwork’s vibrant colours, motifs, lines, complete with their own messages to share with loved ones.
- Make a Memory Map 25-26 April
During this creative making session, participants will be inspired by the Terrestrial Globe and will have the opportunity to create a map of their favourite childhood memories, or even a specific family trip. They can then draw a path through their map remembering a special route or memory, using coloured papers, pencils, and pens.
- Design a Costume and Dress the Artworks 2-3 May
Inspired by the book ‘Who is Wearing What’ published by Louvre Abu Dhabi, this session will centre on fabrics, headdresses, robes, and jewellery. Participants will learn about the symbolic meanings and cultural significance of clothing, before selecting a printout of their favourite object from the collection to dress and decorate using collage with fabrics and coloured papers.
- Make Beaded Objects 9-10 May
A fun making session centred on the Necklace imported from the Indus Valley. Children and their companions will have the opportunity to learn more about the necklace and make their own friendship jewellery, necklaces or bracelets using a variety of beads and threads in different shapes, sizes, and colours.
- Design a Clay Bowl 16-17 May
Make your own clay bowl or small container using air dry clay, inspired by the Jar with cord patterned decoration from Japan. This making session allows children and their companions to relate their mini-project to a story or memory, highlighting the cultural significance of the items we use every day in our homes.
