At Soka Kindergarten, they aim to provide a warm and conducive environment where children enjoy learning.
Their mission is to nurture children’s holistic development through their programme delivered by a team of trained and highly motivated teachers. They believe each child has the inner-motivated power to learn and they commit their teachers as the best external environment to help children bring forth such natural zest for learning.
Soka Kindergarten is founded upon the principle of value-creating, humanistic education, one where both the programme and teacher-student relationship are focused on developing each child to his or her fullest potential.
The curriculum of the kindergarten has been developing in tandem with the aims and principles of the Ministry of Education preschool education curriculum framework, as well as developments in the international education arena.
The design of the programme not only seeks to provide children with a range of learning experiences covering Aesthetics and Creative Expression, Language and Literacy, Discovery of the World, Motor Skills Development, Numeracy, and Social and Emotional Development but also seeks to inculcate values such as perseverance, honesty and respect.
- Learning Centres - Learning centres provide opportunities for children to engage in hands-on experiences, learn to make choices by themselves, explore and investigate more about concepts taught through carefully planned activities. At the Nursery level, learning centres form a major component of the curriculum. Each term, the learning centres are changed according to the project. Teachers set up interesting learning centre activities that promote self help skills, language development, social skills, creativity and responsibility. At the Kindergarten One and Two levels, learning centre activities act as supplementary activities for the class projects to further reinforce concepts and provide hands-on experiences.
- Gymnastics Movement Programme - The school engages BearyFun Gym to run the Gymnastics Movement Programme for the Nursery, and Kindergarten One and Two children. The coaches are qualified and trained to work with preschoolers. The programme is integrated into the curriculum and aims to develop children’s gross motor skills such as muscular strength, endurance, balance, co-ordination and pro social behaviour. The programme also focuses on the development of the child’s dominant movement patterns (such as jumping and landing skills, rolling, balance while still or moving, travelling and use of parts of the body in a controlled way) and the acquisition of simple gymnastics movements such as forward rolls. These fundamental movement abilities are required for work, sports and recreational activities.
- Creative Computer Programme - Soka Kindergarten recognises the need for children to use technology creatively and effectively. Thus, a creative computer programme was integrated into the curriculum. It aims to equip children with essential skills to create their own E-portfolio using PowerPoint, and create posters and pictures using Printmaster. The programme is for K1 and K2 children. In 2013, the school held a one-of-its kind first digital art exhibition by preschoolers. The proceeds from the sale of selected digital art pieces created by the children helped to raise funds for the earthquake stricken victims in Gansu, China. This activity was a part of the kindergarten’s 20th anniversary celebration.
- Music Appreciation Programme - The school engages a trained music specialist to develop and conduct the Music Appreciation Programme, including the use of the Kodaly Approach. Children are introduced to music concepts through listening, singing, and movement, including the use of hand signs, pictures, rhythm symbols and syllables. This programme is for the Kindergarten One and Two children and is integrated into the curriculum.
