Wearable Craft - Traditional Knots, Modern Designs

History of knots

Knotting is an ancient technique used in many cultures around the world. It is still used today, just ask any sailor, boy scout, girl guide, or NASA. Chinese knotting is actually a relatively 'recent' adaptation by the wives of Chinese rulers whom wanted to use them to reflect their status, gain power and enhance their wardrobe. Many times, a spiritual aspect is added to those ornamental creations.

Benefits of knotting

Knotting as a craft is increasingly being recognised as a fun avenue to train hand dexterity, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. School going children and senior citizens reap the most benefits. As they learn to thread the strings into loops, to understand the turns, ins and outs, to hold unfinished knots at just the right tension for working without losing control, to remember which loops to pull and which not to, to persevere despite getting frustrated, to recognise when to give up and re-start, to experience the exhilaration of seeing the design take shape and the relief of finally finishing.

Experience our contemporary designs

From the need to tie the knot correctly to save your life, to the need to showcase your family's wealth and power, the art of tying knots is more than just threading the ends of strings into loops. The threads of a knot are like threads of life. As I bring them together in a knot, I add beauty to the world. By all means buy the machine-made mass-produced products. But the experience of making your own is something you will remember for life.

Activity formats
