French Language Immersion classes for Kids by Gwenn Deroost

Mrs Deroost Gwennaelle is a primary school teacher at the Lycee Français. After teaching for several years in French schools in Dubai, she realised that teaching the language based on a text book in a strict classroom environment did not help improve the children’s communication. So instead, her goal is to build the children’s confidence to speak French by interacting and engaging with them in various settings. She believes that ‘the primary purpose of language is communication – grammar is important, but there’s a bigger picture’. Her holistic training in yoga, meditation, breathing and naturopathy, enables her to offer new learning methods.

Several people share love for the French culture, and Just Be would like to develop it by offering immersion classes in French. These thematic classes will offer the opportunity, through a range of playful and exciting activities, to be immersed in the French language and culture. What Just Be are moving towards is helping the children become fluent speakers by still teaching but with a lot more emphasis on realistic situations and making the children aware of how the language actually works.This allows non-native speakers to improve their French skills in a different way, and to be fully engaged in the language. It will also give French School students a chance to practice the language out of an academic learning environment by finding themselves in fun every day situations of communication.

Proposed activities: drama, meditation using the vocabulary covered in the particular class, songs, cooking, and arts and crafts.
What to bring: one clear book, your enthusiasm and smile.
Field trips and activities may be organized to allow the students to experience and explore various realistic communication situations.
Cooking classes will only include gluten-free and vegan recipes.
