Grouping of Children
Baby Room (3 months – 18 months)
The baby room provides care and stimulation for babies and younger toddlers aged between 3 months to 18 months. Our staff meets the individual needs of each baby in a loving environment. Teaching staff work closely with parents to ensure that the transition from home to the Centre is a positive one. Within the rooms, there are open floor play areas where babies and early walkers can explore a variety of planned activities such as messy play, music time, treasure baskets and sensory area. Plenty of ‘free’ play opportunities are also available.
Toddler Room (18 months – 24 months)
At this age, usually between 18–24 months, children are beginning to show increasing independence and obvious pleasure in moving, communicating and learning through play. As the child develops, we gradually encourage the establishment of a routine in preparation for moving up to the Nursery Room. The activities in the Toddler Room are very diverse: from energetic action songs, ball pools, dancing and work-outs via messy play, to quieter times of storytelling, heuristic play and relaxation, all designed to meet the developmental needs of the children.
Nursery Room (2 years to 3 years)
At age 2+ children transfer to the Nursery Room which offers a more structured environment than that of the Toddler Room. Most children of this age respond well to routine because it enables them to be confident and aware of the world around them. The children are stimulated and encouraged with a wide range of activities including phonics, mark making, music and movement, dance, painting, creative activities, messy play, sand and water play, construction, role play, table top activities and much more. For those who do not need to nap during the day, a quiet area is provided for quiet activities or storytelling. Throughout the day, there will be times when the children are in larger groups and times when they are in small groups or enjoying 1:1 time with their key person or another practitioner.
One of the main aims for the nursery age range is developing their Personal, Social and Emotional skills, i.e. learning to take turns and share toys, communicating and establishing relationships with peers and adults. This is achieved by learning through play and informed planning through observation. Children learn by example and can develop more quickly in groups of children of a similar age / stage of development, particularly with regard to potty training, eating and social skills.
