Understanding computers with SmartyKit

Help your child to get the most crucial skill of the 21st century!

SmartyKit Workshops are designed to introduce basic concepts of computing to kids and to encourage them to learn coding. Learn smarter with SmartyKit!

Coding is an essential skill for the future. Not only it improves academic performance by developing analytical and problem-solving skills, but it is also often called a new literacy as we all depend on technology and most future careers will involve a deep understanding of digital technologies.

KIT (Knowledge Intellect Talent) is organizing three workshops for kids of different age groups with the inventor of SmartyKit.

When: January 20, 2019
Where: 10 Winstedt road, Block D Singapore 227977 (NAS Workplace, GIG International school)

Workshop #1: Creating an Artificial Brain

Age: 10-14 years
Duration: 1 hour 45 min
Time: 9.30 am-11.15 am

Overview:
Kids will learn that a processor is the “brain” of every computer and smartphone. It does all the work, executes commands (a.k.a. instructions) of programs uploaded in the memory.
We will discuss the main types of commands and how the processor communicates with the other parts of the computer through the “buses.”
Kids will assemble a simple ‘motherboard’ with an 8-bit processor, which executes simple commands. Blinking LEDs would indicate the addresses, which processor is trying to reach, seeking the next command to execute.

Workshop #2: Listening computer’s heart – a simple piano

Age: 6-12 years
Duration: 60 min
Time: 12.15 p.m. - 13.15 p.m.

Overview:
Kids will learn that everything in a computer is synchronized by a generator – computer’s heart, and they will assemble one by themselves.
But how do we know that the signal is out there? We will see the signals using an oscilloscope and hear them by using a beeper.
By adding 4 buttons, we will turn it into a simple piano with a well-known and famous 8-bit sound.

Workshop #3: Smiling Pixels

Age: 5-10 years
Duration: 60 min
Time: 1.20 pm - 2.20 pm

Overview:
Kids will learn the capstone of every computer, smartphone, or a modern TV screen by turning on the dots-pixels to create a picture.
They will draw an 8x8 pixel picture in a coloring book, then we convert it to a digital code (1 is for colored pixels and 0 is for blank), upload into the memory chip and project it on a LED screen.
Kids will also create their first electronic circuits with LEDs on the breadboards.

Price
Workshop #1 - $60
Workshop #2 and #3 - $40 per workshop
Any two workshops together - $70
All three workshops (half day) with pre-ordered lunch (main course+juice) - $125

About the trainer

Sergey Paranin is an inventor of SmartyKit - a computer construction kit for kids http://smartykit.org/
He has been making complex things simple for the last 10 years, teaching Statistics course in Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) and Financial modelling course in New Economic School (NES). Sergey studied Applied Math and Computer Science at MAI, programmed on C++, PHP, Python, R. At the age of 10 he started soldering electronics parts and learning C++ through the game development. Since that time he has been dreaming to build a computer. Having developed a SmartyKit - a computer construction kit, Sergey achieved his dream and made it possible for the other kids, who like electronics, computer science and fun.
