This lecture series aims to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics education, and to enable students to learn more about the recent development of various topics related to STEAM.

  • Lecture 3 - Medical Application of "Bat Ultrasound Navigation"

Ultrasound refers to the mechanical wave propagating in a medium with a frequency higher than 20,000Hz - the average upper limit of the human auditory system. Many animals can generate and use ultrasound for different purposes (For example, bats use ultrasound for navigation and food hunting). Ultrasound has been widely used by humankind for many industrial and medical applications. In the industrial field, ultrasound is routinely used for nondestructive testing for crucial engineering structures, such as for inspecting engine turbine blades. In the healthcare field, ultrasound has been widely used to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of different diseases due to its radiation-free nature and ease of use.
This lecture will discuss the use of innovative “application-oriented ultrasound technologies” for different medical applications, including 3D ultrasound for scoliosis assessment (Scolioscan), ultrasound for fatty liver and liver fibrosis assessment (Liverscan), etc.

  • Lecture 4 - From Dripping Droplets to Biomedical Instrumentation and Therapeutics

Droplets can be found ubiquitously in our everyday life, for instance, droplets in kitchen sink, on car windows, and many other contexts. Are all droplets the same? What are the physics that govern droplets formation? What determine the shape of droplets? Why are droplets useful for biotechnologies? And is it possible that controlling droplets can open new doors to treat diseases? This lecture will discuss the application of dripping droplets in biomedical instrumentation and therapeutics.

  • Lecture 5 - Challenges and Opportunities of Novel Electric Vehicle Technologies

With ever increasing concerns on environment issues (e.g. Global Warming), the development of more environmental friendly electric vehicles (EVs) is taking on an accelerated pace. Different kinds of EV (including the battery EV, hybrid EV, plug-in hybrid EV and fuel-cell EV) has its features, shortcomings and potentials. This lecture will discuss key technologies and latest developments of EVs, and some innovative EV technological challenges (including the in-wheel motors and wireless charging). In addition, some novel EV development and opportunities, including the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) service and vehicular energy network, will also be discussed.

  • Lecture 6 - Hello, Mental Health!

Dr. Kar-kin Albert CHUNG (Specialist in Psychiatry, Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong)

Technology has revolutionized psychiatry from enabling an early recognition of mental health issues, facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, to monitoring and enhancing mental health conditions (e.g. the wide application of Telepsychiatry during COVID-19 pandemic). This lecture will introduce some common mental health conditions, and how technology opens up new avenues for the delivery of more accessing and convenient mental healthcare services for patients.

  • Lecture 7 - Fluorescence-mediated radiative cooling for green buildings and skin electronics

“Passive daytime radiative cooling” enables cooling below ambient temperature without the need for electricity or refrigerants, is regarded as one of the effective technologies for achieving the dual carbon goals. However, the cooling effect of the conventional polymer coatings with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles is limited by the UV absorption of TiO2. This lecture will introduce a newly developed fluorescence-mediated radiative cooling. The fluorescent pigments can re-emit part of the absorbed UV light as visible fluorescence, which not only increase the effective solar reflectance and cooling performance, but also promotes the application of passive daytime radiative cooling for effective heat management in wearable electronics and miniaturized optoelectronics.
