Stanley Kubrick Retrospective

Stanley Kubrick Retrospective

This summer at Cinema Akil, we are celebrating the works of Stanley Kubrick, who had a profound influence not only on films but on pop-culture at large.

One of America’s cinema pioneers, Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) had a profound influence not only on films but on pop-culture at large. From David Bowie to Steven Spielberg, Kubrick’s obsession with the unconscious and the consequences of the dream state did not yet cease to influence filmmakers 23 years after his death.

A craftsman, Kubrick was making films far from Hollywood, picking each time a genre he would polish until complete satisfaction: horror with THE SHINING (1980), war-films with PATHS OF GLORY (1957 – set during WWI), DR. STRANGELOVE (1964 – and the nuclear obsession) and FULLMETAL JACKET (1987 – set during the Vietnam War), period pieces with BARRY LINDON (1975), science-fiction with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968). Always simmering in Kubrick’s films are his obsessions for transgression and temporality: the adaptation of the eponymous novel LOLITA (1962), the fallout of violence in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) and the controversial and mysterious EYES WIDE SHUT starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman(1999) are, too, pieces of the Kubrick puzzle. Screening throughout our Summer of Classics, the nine feature films of the retrospective invites the audience to get lost in the persistent look of Kubrick’s timeless work.
