BBC Proms Dubai

BBC Proms Dubai

Now in its 124th season, the BBC Proms is a much-loved British tradition that aims to bring the best classical music to as wide an audience as possible.

Following the huge success of the inaugural BBC Dubai Proms in 2017 we are delighted this iconic Festival will return to Dubai Opera to be staged over four days from 19 to 22 March 2019.

The audiences in 2017 were overwhelmingly enthusiastic and welcoming and host BBC Radio 3 presenter Petroc Trelawny will once again lead us through the five concerts of the 2019 BBC Dubai Proms towards the Last Night of the Proms – Dubai style.

Alongside the main concerts of the BBC Dubai proms runs a wide-ranging programme of outreach and education activities including pre-concert talks, open rehearsals, chamber music coaching and a foyer performance with young musicians, masterclasses, a choral workshop with local Arabic school choirs and the creation of a new ensemble: the Dubai Opera Festival Chorus. We look forward to welcoming music lovers of all ages to engage with this programme – and maybe even perform with the DOFC! As in 2017, we are enormously grateful to the British Council for their support in making the learning programme possible.

Buy your BBC Proms Dubai Season Pass today. See 5 incredible performances for just AED 375. (Limited availability).

Due to anticipated high demand, promming (standing) tickets for the Last Night of the Proms will be eligible for purchase only to customers who have bought tickets to at least one of the five other Proms concerts.

Tickets will be sold strictly on a first come first served basis and ticket buyers will be contacted by the Dubai Opera Box Office with a unique password in order to purchase promming tickets for the Last Night of the Proms.

Prom 1 – First Night of the Proms

BBC Proms Dubai 2019 opens with a short, punchy world premiere – Tmesis – from the exciting British composer Bushra El–Turk, drawing on her Lebanese roots for its sound world.

The fast-rising British conductor Ben Gernon is then joined by violinist Karen Gomyo in Korngold’s lush, romantic violin concerto. Karen is truly a world artist – born in Japan, raised in Canada, living in Berlin, she has already performed with many of the world’s top orchestras and we are delighted to welcome her to Dubai for her BBC Symphony Orchestra debut.

The second half of this opening concert features music from one of the twentieth century’s greatest and best-loved ballets, Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev.

When: Tue 19 Mar 2019 8:00PM

Prom 2 – BBC Singers

Conducted by their Chief Conductor, Sofi Jeannin, the BBC Singers showcase some of the most exciting Choral music of the last 100 years in a programme that ranges from Gershwin to Abba, Francis Poulenc to Laura Mvula.

At the centre of their concert is Poulenc’s Figure humaine – a truly extraordinary, magnificent choral masterpiece written at the height of the Second World War and premiered by the BBC Singers. It sits alongside works by fellow French composer Maurice Duruflé, and the Choral Dances from Benjamin Britten’s opera Gloriana.

The second half of their programme is dedicated to the lighter side of the BBC Singers’ repertoire and includes Sing to the Moon by the renowned artist Laura Mvula, herself a featured composer in the 2018 BBC Proms. The BBC Singers end their programme with choral arrangements of ABBA and the iconic satirical writing of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann.

We are delighted to be joined for part of this programme by choristers from local schools

When: Wed 20 Mar 2019 8:00PM

Prom 3 – BEETHOVEN IX

William Walton’s ravishingly beautiful Cello Concerto dates from the 1950s and precedes what will surely be one of the highlights of this 2019 BBC Dubai Proms – the premiere in Dubai of Beethoven’s great choral symphony (No.9) Conducted by Richard Farnes and with a hand-picked quartet of British soloists, the BBC Singers and the newly-created Dubai Opera Festival Chorus, this concert is unmissable!

When: Thu 21 Mar 2019 8:00PM

Prom 4 – Late Night Prom: Ksenija Sidorova Tango Trio

Impeccable virtuosity and charisma define the accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, whose playing has verve, style and attitude. In a late night jazz-infused programme, the Ksenija Sidorova Tango Trio introduces us to the diversity of tango music both in Latin America as well as in Latvia with “Midnight in Riga” written especially by Arturs Maskats for this project. The trio brings both fire and cool to the BBC Dubai Proms 2019, and reveals the extraordinary subtleties and sounds of the accordion.

When: Thu 21 Mar 2019 11:00PM

Prom 5 – Last Night of the Proms

Hosted in inimitable style by Petroc Trelawny, the Last Night of the 2019 BBC Dubai Proms brings everyone together for the kind of musical party every great music festival should have.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers, baritone Roderick Williams, Ksenija Sidorova and the Dubai Opera Festival Chorus are all presided over by conductor Richard Farnes whose Proms debut took place in 2018.

Alongside the traditional musical elements of the Last Night, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 and Rule, Britannia!, the programme includes Stanford’s Songs of the Sea, the fiery passion of tango, and of Carmen, an exquisite Shakespeare setting for 16 soloists and orchestra by Vaughan Williams, and much more. This is one concert you won’t want to miss.
