Highstein was a sculptor, and used different materials like bronze, stone, steel and wood to form abstract objects inspired by the natural world. But drawing was also an essential part of his practice.
This workshop, inspired by a sculpture of the same name, familiarizes children with sculpture and drawing. Children will use different drawing techniques to depict, space, mass and weight and then move on to clay, to create sculptures related to their drawings. The workshop is led by Madeleine Butcher and is suitable for 6 - 12 years old.
With an MA in Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art, Maddy has exhibited at the RCA, the Barber Institute, Brooklyn Brewery, Beirut Biel, Dubai World Art Show and abandoned Scottish churches. as well as creating street art in New York, London, Dubai, Marseilles and Barcelona.
Driven by bold, contrasting colours and erratic graphics, the themes of music, warmth, joy and immediacy recur throughout her work. She specialises in large-scale portraits of subjects she admires, fused with abstract patterns and intricate illustrations that attempt to capture but also free a subject's character or spirit.
