Tracing: But We Cannot See Them

Tracing: But We Cannot See Them

Join us for a Zoom Gathering with artists of the first generation of the UAE’s conceptual, experimental art scene.

The artists and writers featured in the exhibition But We Cannot See Them will gather for a conversation about their community’s art history, past and present. This bi-lingual (Arabic/English) conversation will be led by art historian Aisha Stoby and joined by Nujoom Alghanem, Khalid Albudoor, Mohammed Kazem, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Abdullah Al Saadi, Vivek Vilasini, Adel Khozam, Ebtisam Abdulaziz, Cristiana de Marchi, and Abdulraheem Sharif as well as the exhibition’s curatorial team: Maya Allison (NYUAD Chief Curator), Bana Kattan (Associate Curator, MCA Chicago), and Alaa Edris (Assistant Director, Publications and Education, NYUAD). Everyone is welcome to join and participate in the conversation through this gathering, which will be in the format of a Zoom party rather than a webinar (you will be on-screen with the group).

This event is part of the TRACE: Archives and Reunions series, and will mark the publishing of the online archive for the But We Cannot See Them: Tracing a UAE Art Community, 1988-2008 exhibition, including extensive interviews with the artists, the Youth Guide, brochure and for the first time in digital form, the extensive book publication will be made available, in its entirety, in the archive. This rare sourcebook includes several contextualizing essays, as well as interviews with the members of this community.
