Drama for Kids and Teens

In a world where confidence is currency, one Dubai theatre is challenging the idea that bravery is something children are simply born with.

The Courtyard Playhouse, a long-standing independent theatre in Al Quoz, is putting bravery, confidence and creativity front and centre this September, using an unexpected tool: the stage.

We meet adults every day who struggle with public speaking, group collaboration or decision-making under pressure. And many say the same thing: ‘I wish I’d done theatre as a kid,’” says Tiffany Schultz, co-founder of the Courtyard Playhouse.

The theatre’s new initiative, Building Brave Kids, is more than a slogan. It’s a response to what psychologists and educators are calling a growing confidence crisis—where young people feel increasingly anxious, risk-averse, and unsure of how to express themselves.

Backed by global research, theatre education is being recognised as a vital training ground for developing soft skills—like communication, empathy, adaptability and resilience—that traditional classrooms often don’t prioritise.

A 2023 study published by the University of Michigan found that improvisation classes significantly reduced social anxiety in teens and improved their tolerance for uncertainty—one of the key predictors of long-term wellbeing. Similarly, a drama pedagogy study in Europe showed weekly theatre sessions dramatically boosted students’ general self-confidence and academic self-belief.

We’re not interested in creating stars,” Schultz adds. “We’re interested in creating young people who aren’t afraid to be themselves, who can bounce back from mistakes, and who feel seen and heard. The theatre just happens to be the perfect place to learn that.

The Playhouse, which has been running children’s programmes for over 12 years, offers a full slate of drama, musical theatre and improv classes for ages 4 to 18. But unlike talent-focused studios, their emphasis is on real-life readiness, not performance perfection.

Many parents have noticed the difference. One wrote,

“They came home calmer and more confident. It wasn’t just play—it was growth you could see.”

With Term 1 classes beginning on 7 September the theatre is encouraging families to look beyond grades and test scores—and consider the value of helping kids build something far deeper: courage.
