Tornado in a Bottle: An Experiment in Fluid Dynamics

This is a classic experiment that’s perfect for introducing kids to the basics of fluid dynamics. All you need is two bottles, some water, and some food coloring. Fill one bottle with water and add a few drops of food coloring. Place it inside the second bottle and screw the lids on tight. Now spin both bottles around quickly – what happens? A tornado-like vortex appears! 

The vortex forms when the spinning creates suction at the center of the bottles, drawing the colored water inward and creating a funnel. This experiment demonstrates how air pressure affects fluids and can be used to demonstrate principles such as circulation patterns or tornado formation in weather systems. 

Crystallization Experiment

This classic experiment is great for teaching kids about the principles of solubility and crystal formation. All you need are some Epsom salts, warm water, and a jar or cup. Add two tablespoons of Epsom salts to the cup, then fill it with warm water until the salts dissolve. Then, let your concoction sit overnight and crystals will form. 

The crystals form because when the solution cools down, it can no longer hold as much of the salt in the solution – so some of it begins to precipitate out of the solution onto the bottom of your cup or jar. The experiment demonstrates how solids can become soluble in liquids, and how cooling affects this process. 

Making a Lava Lamp

Making a lava lamp is a fun way to introduce kids to the principles of density and chemical reactions. You only need vegetable oil, water, food coloring, Alka-Seltzer tablets, and an empty bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with vegetable oil and then add some food coloring of your choice. Then fill the rest of the bottle with water and drop in some pieces of Alka-Seltzer tablet. 


When the tablet begins to dissolve it will create tiny bubbles that rise through the liquid – this happens because carbon dioxide is released by the reaction between the tablet ingredients and water. The bubbles are less dense than both the water and oil so they will float on top! This demonstrates how different densities can cause liquids to separate. 




There are plenty of fun and educational activities that you can do with your kids at home to help them learn more about science.
