Three and a half centuries ago, the famous emperor Shahjahan shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi and established the city of Shahjahanbad (now know as Delhi). On the banks of River Yamuna, he built the majestic Lal Qila (Red Fort). Chandini Chowk was built by his daughter Jahanara as an accompaniment to the Red Fort. It was designed as a large market chowk (square) with a central pool close to the for. According to legend, it was the shimmering moonlight on the water of the pool that gave it the name of Chandini Chowk or the "the moonlight square". Chandini Chowk today is one of the oldest and busiest markets in Delhi, Chandini Chowk`s speciality is the immense variety of its gali (lane) markets and their authentic "Indian-ness" Each gali has something unique about it. From the gali which houses the wholesale textiles market, to the one that glitters with jewellers shops, to the Paranthawali gali... From genuine Indian food, delicacies and sweets of more than a thousand kinds, to sarees with chikan and Zaree work.
