The 2017/18 Performing Arts Appreciation Project for Secondary Students will be themed around a specific area of performing arts – theatre.
In addition to learning about the theatre through the perspectives of history and aesthetics, students will try out creative work and critiques. They will gain knowledge into theatre through multiple angles, including “seeing”, “feeling” and “writing”, etc. Both junior and senior secondary students are welcomed to take part in this year’s programme. Through an Introductory Talk and the Understanding Theatre Workshop Series, students will experience a journey of theatrical appreciation and analysis.
The project comprises two parts. Project schedule will be actual date and time to be arranged with participating schools:
Part one: Introductory Talk
(Duration: 2 hours, for all students from participating school)
- To inspire students’ understanding and interest in theatre arts and to introduce the basic concepts for theatre critiquing and appreciating.
- To stimulate students’ interest in the Understanding Theatre Workshop Series, through which they can explore further into theatre arts.
Part two: Understanding Theatre Workshop Series
( 6 sessions total in 1.5 hour per session, 20-25 students for each workshop)
- 6 workshop sessions consist of a variety of activities, covering an interactive segment, drama showcase, discussions and writing of a drama critique or a post-event report.
- Professional instructor(s) of the workshop will employ easy-to-understand methods to introduce the history, schools and evolution of drama; the instructor(s) will also guide students to read deeply into the texts or use specific themes to devise a short play. Participating schools can select one of the methods for their creation.
- Students will present their own creations in groups and appreciate the works of others, followed by discussion on the spot and critique.
Each participant is required to write a short essay to express their points of view on the performance. They will receive comment from professional instructor(s) on his/her writing. The instructors will select essays from the students and publish on the website of The International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong) and Audience Building Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
