Essay Writing Workshops

Intro to Analysis: Issues in Fiction (ages 12-14)

While fictional texts are often written to engage and entertain readers, many also raise important questions and issues facing our society today. Reading fiction then offers an opportunity to begin discussions with students about important issues and relate the stories to what they know or can learn about in the real world. In this workshop, students will read and discuss excerpts from works of fiction as a springboard to explore various contemporary issues. As they discuss and analyse, they will learn how to write about these issues, explaining what they know, asking questions they'd like answered, and sharing experiences and opinions of their own. This summer, each week of this essay writing workshop will feature a different text, so students are welcome to sign up for one week or more.

Skill-Building Workshops

Camp NaNoWriMo Support

Join an international movement and complete a writing project in one month! NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) traditionally runs in November when writers of all ages and all over the world commit to writing a 50,000-word novel in only one month. Camp NaNoWriMo offers the same experience in July, but writers can set their own goals! This summer, ECP is proud to offer free weekly writing and workshop sessions throughout July for writers ages 13+ who want to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo. Tuesdays will be workshop sessions, with guided discussions and activities, while Thursdays will be writing sessions where we invite you for some focused writing time (and moral support!). The sessions will be hosted by Press Start Hong Kong at their space in Sheung Wan, with a special game-inspired workshop on world building on Sat, July 8.

Creative Writing and Publishing Workshops

Legends of Fantasy Lands (ages 10-13)

Have you ever wanted to create your own world? A world where you made the rules and anything was possible? In this summer creative writing workshop for ages 10-13, students will draw an extensive map of a fantasy world—its deserts and rivers, its cities and coasts, its evil swamps and enchanted forests. Then, they will write the legends of these fantasy lands. Like the scribes of old, they will warn travellers of the trolls under the cliffs or tell them of the treasure hidden beneath the ancient temples.
