HeroesToo launches ‘Design Challenge 2020-21 – Creative Ideas in a Pandemic’

  • Open to Primary and Secondary school teams in Hong Kong & abroad
  • To design a sustainable solution addressing the issue of social distancing
  • Top 3 teams win 3D printers for their school

HeroesToo, a local charity, today launched its ‘Design Challenge 2020-21 – Creative Ideas in a Pandemic’. Targeting student teams from primary and secondary school in Hong Kong and abroad, the competition aims to promote creative thinking and innovative solutions while solving the problem of social distancing.

Participating teams will need to submit a sustainable design idea which can make their school life normal again, whilst adhering to the social distance guidelines. For example, it could be a ‘Room within a Room’ solution, say, in a classroom set up where the usual day-to-day interactions and activities can take place without compromising on social distancing rules.

The HeroesToo team will also organize a series of ‘Design Thinking Workshop’, a hands on experience of Design Thinking, to make students understand the nuts and bolts of it. Leveraging the expertise of experienced facilitators from the corporate and academic sectors, the first workshop, to be held on 28th November 2020, will be free of cost and on a first come first serve basis.

‘We want to encourage out-of-the-box thinking in young minds, so that they can collectively come up with fresh perspectives and solutions to create a safe educational environment in the current context. An idea that could possibly be mass produced, benefiting the society at large,” said Mr Raymond Yap, Founder & CEO, HeroesToo.

“We, with this initiative, would also like the students to be more aware of the issues surrounding them and have belief that that they can play a role or take action in solving them,” he further added.

The Design Challenge participants categories are divided into – Senior Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary.

It will be held in 2 Stages; the first stage requires submission of a written proposal / concept using a template available to download on the HeroesToo website, along with a design sketch. The submissions needs to be made by 15th January 2021.

The Stage 1 entries will be judged on originality, theme interpretation & clarity, feasibility, artistic bent and overall composition.

The selected Hong Kong finalists from the first stage will be required to design a 3D printable model in a digital format and send it along with an introduction video about their design. The organisation will conduct a crash course in 3D software course for the finalists, so that they are better equipped in handling stage 2 submissions. And additional mentoring will be provided by other sponsors like Steelcase, Makerbot and the Hong Kong Designers Association. The deadline for Stage 2 submissions is 12th March 2021 with the final winners being announced at the end of March 2021.

The top three teams, in each category, stand to win 3D printers for their schools sponsored by Stratasys.
