Cinderella and her Qipao Exhibtion

Cinderella and her Qipao Exhibtion

Qipao (aka Cheongsam) is a fashion symbol of Chinese culture. Its popularity reached its peak in mid-20th century Hong Kong, where female celebrities showcased their trendy outfits and exuded their graceful beauty. A significant part of a rich Chinese cultural legacy, the cheongsam making technique was inscribed onto the The National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, and qipaos can be seen in motion pictures even to this day. The "Cinderella and Her Qipao" exhibition is a programme of the 2023 Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival and a continuation of the “The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Qipao” exhibition in 2017. Qipaos from a selection of films that span across different eras will be displayed in the new exhibition, recreating the cultural landscapes of the past with pieces worn by iconic actresses such as Li Lihua, Xia Meng, Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin, etc.

More than 30 film costumes will be displayed in the exhibition, together with related film footage and oral history interviews, in order for visitors to have a deeper understanding of qipao in films.
