International Museum Day 2018, Hong Kong

International Museum Day 2018, Hong Kong

Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics

In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.

The theme of IMD 2018 is "Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics". With the constant advances in information technology, the communications and connections with one another become more complex and diverse every day. Museums are an inherent part of the local communities, cultural landscape and natural environment, so they are also committed to following the current trends. In order to enhance the public's understanding of, and connection with, museums, they have to develop new approaches in interpreting their exhibits, and explore new opportunities through social media to enrich the audience's viewing experience. These new approaches will allow audiences to interact with the exhibits and with each other. However, not all these new connections are due to technology. As museums strive to maintain their relevance in society, they also make an effort to organise cooperative projects focusing on the local community and different social groups to engage new audiences and strengthen connections with them.

This year, IMD in Hong Kong is scheduled for 12-13 May 2018. Over these two days, visitors will be admitted free* to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired! For details of IMD 2018 in Hong Kong, please stay tuned for the updates on the Hong Kong Public Museums website.

*except for special exhibitions and programmes, which have an admission fee
