  • Bach  Suite No 2 in D minor for Unaccompanied Cello, BWV1008

**This programme replaces the original programme for “HKS Recital Series: Duo Recital by Edgar & Jérémie Moreau”, as pianist Jérémie Moreau is now unable to come to Hong Kong.**

Widely regarded today as some of the most iconic and influential works for the cello since its serendipitous discovery by the legendary cellist Pablo Casals, Bach’s Cello Suites have stood as a constant in the waves of cello repertoire which have come after, putting to test not only the technical prowess of generations of cellists, but also their understanding of its incredible textural complexities and emotional depth. In this recital, French cellist Edgar Moreau – crowned “Instrumental Soloist of the Year” at the 2015 Victoires de la Musique Classique when he was aged just 21, whose phenomenal rise to success stands testament to his peerless mastery and command of the instrument – will present his exquisite interpretation of the first three Suites.

Edgar Moreau (Cello)

  • “Stunning!” Le Figaro
  • “A cello revelation!” Ouest France
  • “Moreau doesn’t hold back in expressiveness or musicianship… [his] low notes are thick and warm, the high ones silvery and smooth.” The Classic Review
  • “His technique is golden, his sonority expansive, generous, velvety, and without the vibrato that tends to thicken the voice of the cello… In his playing, one clearly senses the finesse of the French school, where the manipulation of the bow evokes the art of fencing for its flexibility and the speed of its reflexes.”
  • Le Figaro
  • Has collaborated with such conductors and orchestras as Dudamel, Gergiev, Myung-Whun Chung, Vasily Petrenko, Philharmonique de Radio France, Munich Philharmonic, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, etc
  • Chamber partners include Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, Renaud Capuçon, Daniil Trifonov, Andras Schiff, Emmanuel Pahud, David Kadouch, among others
  • “Soliste Instrumental de l’Année”, Victoires de la Musique Classique 2015
