Modern-day twists and turns transform classic fairytale into delectable balletic feast
In this outstanding adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairytale, Hansel and Gretel are growing up in a mid 20th-century Scottish town. After other children mysteriously disappear, the brother-and-sister sleuths step out to find their friends. Losing their way in a magic forest, the pair meet a beautiful fairy and follow her to a gingerbread-clad house. But, once inside, things are not as sweet as they seem...
Scottish Ballet will celebrate its 50th anniversary as Scotland’s national ballet company next year, having gained international recognition over the decades for its pioneering productions and technical excellence. Hansel & Gretel is a great example, as exquisite choreography by artistic director Christopher Hampson transfers this favourite children’s fable to the world of classical ballet. An atmospheric score by composer Engelbert Humperdinck, from the 1893 opera based on the same story, wonderfully adds to the proceedings, with ingenious sets, backdrops and costumes completing the magical line-up. Eerie and exciting, humorous and highly inventive, Scottish Ballet’s scintillating show is a treat for the whole family.
