Hanging Around @ JTIA, LIFE Mart and Field Market are once again joining hands to organize a large-scale market on the 22 and 23 September, with the themes of “Mid-Autumn Festival” and “Nostalgia”.
There will be a whole host of community cultural activities, including a hand-made market, paper zone, special exhibitions, mystery film screenings, workshops, and kids’ games area. Come and enjoy the moon with us. In line with the festive atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Jao Tsung-I Academy has also made this weekend the annual Open Days. The public is invited to come and explore our historic sites and interesting historical spaces through a variety of activities.

Themed Market Activities
Hand-made Market
LIFE Mart and Field Market, the organizers of this market, support local hand-made products and their creators. People who enjoy the handmade can come and mingle together in a simple and comfortable market environment where 80 quality handicraft brands will be on offer.

Paper Zone
In the “Paper Zone” there are around 60 brands and as many as 2000 postcards, the work of photographers, illustrators and designers from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. There is also an area where you can have fun decorating notebooks with paper tape, stickers, and stamps.

In conjunction with the “Mid-Autumn Festival” and “Nostalgia” themes, two special exhibitions will be held: one recalling childhood in “Children at Play” and one about forgetting the past in “Looking Back with Regret”, and appreciating just being together on moonlit nights.
Special Exhibition: “Children at Play”
Do you remember what it was like to be a child? What was the toy you treasured the most? In the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Jao Tsung-I Academy together with 448 Farm will present over 100 nostalgic children’s toys for you to regain your sense of childhood fun and invoke happy times. We hope that these toys will help you to preserve your precious memories of childhood.

Special Exhibition: “Looking Back with Regret”
People have joys and sorrows, and the moon also waxes and wanes. Through this exhibition we want to tell stories of “when things were not perfect”, share our feelings and let our regrets become a part of life, and slowly smooth away the mistakes of the past.

Kids Game Area
To get into the mood for mid-autumn, we will set up a kids outdoor game area with simple and fun games; We invite you to return to an era when there was no video games or mobile games.

Workshops
There will be different craft workshops throughout the weekend. Alongside an instructor, you will be cutting, pasting, and making a unique handmade item. Feel the creativity and warmth of the handmade.
Mystery Screenings
Two films linked related to “Mid-Autumn Festival” and “Nostalgia” will be screened on two separate evenings for the public to experience different moonlights within 100-year-old red brick walls.

Shuttle Bus
For the convenience of the public, a shuttle bus will be running between Lai Chi Kok and JTIA throughout the weekend.
Jao Tsung-I Academy Open Day Activities:
Take a Walk through a 100 years of Hong Kong’s History
Stepping into the Academy is like stepping into a time machine where you can shuttle between different historic sites over the course of one hundred years. The Academy conserves and revitalizes Hong Kong’s history as well as displaying it in miniature. Guided tours will be led by experienced tour guides who will provide an in-depth introduction to the site. Participants will be able to access areas usually not open to the public and learn about the history of the site and historic remains such as the “Kowloon Customs/Station Boundary Stone”, the old incinerator as well as the old pier. Every step truly has a story to tell.

Traces Left Behind
Visitors use materials such as clay, leaves, and paper to create models of the Jao Tsung-I Academy and its surrounding areas to enhance visitors’ understanding and connection to the Academy. The whole process from start to finish will be filmed to show the hard work that went into completing the models.

Strolling and Sketching in the Academy
The Jao Tsung-I Academy is located on a lush green hillside in Lai Chi Kok, forming a rare sight in the city. On our Open Days, you will be able to walk around the Academy with Mr. Yat Kuen Chan of the Hong Kong Sketching Society and explore your favourite spots, and use your brush or pen as well as your imagination to record the unique landscape of this Grade III historic complex.

The Art of Nature
Jao Tsung-I Academy is full of greenery: leaves and flowers undergo a life cycle: aging, yellowing, and then falling off. Participants will use fallen leaves, dried flowers, and dried seeds to form collages without frames, giving new life to these materials as well as gaining a better understanding of the diversity of the natural ecology of the Academy.

“The World of Flying Chinese Characters” Paper Plane Competition
We believe that making and playing with paper airplanes is fun for children of all ages. Have you ever thought about using your knowledge of Chinese characters that you have gained from the exhibition “The Vivid World of Chinese Characters” to make your own Chinese paper airplane? We invite you to explore the hidden possibilities of Chinese characters by joining the “World of Flying Chinese Characters” paper airplane competition on the 22 and 23 September and launch them to the skies and thus the future.

How to get there?
Free shuttle bus services between the Jao Tsung-I Academy, Heritage Lodge, Lai Chi Kok MTR Station, and Mei Foo MTR Station are available throughout the day.
Public Transport
By MTR
Take Exit B at the Mei Foo Station and walk towards the direction of HKU SPACE until you come to the CLP Power Substation. Go up to the footbridge and turn left to the Castle Peak Road Sitting-out Area. Then cross the Castle Peak Road at the pedestrian crossing and arrive at the Jao Tsung-I Academy.
Or take Exit A at the Lai Chi Kok Station, walk to the bus stations next to the Cheung Sha Wan Plaza, and take bus No. 31B, 32, 35A, 36B or 286X. Alight at the Jao Tsung-I Academy stop.

Take KMB bus No. 31B, 32, 35A, 36B, 40 or 286X. Alight at the Jao Tsung-I Academy stop.
