Have you ever marvelled at Hong Kong's rich Biodiversity?
Do you know you can also use DNA Barcoding to identify species like scanning product barcode in the supermarket? DNA Barcoding can be apply to various fields such as identifying exotic or endangered food products in markets, monitoring disease vectors and detecting food mislabeling. This is not rocket science, you can also participate in this Barcode project at the pop up bio lab at the Citizen Science Faire.
In this workshop, you will:
- Learn about the working principle of basic biotechnology techniques such as DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis
- Do experiments on strawberry DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis using candies
- Learn about how can you help building a biodiversity library of Hong Kong in the “Barcode Hong Kong” citizen science project
