This introduction course in digital electronics, set up around the popular Arduino microcontroller, will teach you from scratch how to build your own obstacle avoiding robot.
No prior knowledge of electronics is required, this course starts at the very beginning. You will start by learning how to create a blinking light, and from there on how to make coloured lights, read sensors and buttons, control the speed and direction of motors, and show information on displays. Upon completion of the course you will be able to put it all together and create your very own obstacle avoiding robot from scratch.
Along the way you will learn about electricity, how to draw and read circuit diagrams, and how to program the Arduino (using the C++ computer language). With the knowledge gained you will be able to continue your foray in the wonderful world of electronics and the Arduino microcontroller. Included in the course fee is a set of electronic components worth $500 which includes all the components you need for this course, including the Arduino board, the robot chassis, electric motors, sensors, wires, resistors, capacitors, LEDs, displays, etc.
When
This course takes 8 weeks, every Thursday at 16:30 from 18 October until 6 December. Each class takes about 1 1/2 hours of which one hour of teaching and half an hour of practising and experimenting with what you just learned.
Who is the course for?
It is meant for secondary school students, age 12-18. Small groups, maximum 8 students in the class.
Course overview
- Lesson 1: Electrical circuits and Ohm’s law, your first program on Arduino: blink.
- Lesson 2: More LED controls: multiple LEDs and colourful LEDs.
- Lesson 3: Sensor inputs: buttons, force sensor, light sensor.
- Lesson 4: Motors 1: control a servo, start/stop a DC motor.
- Lesson 5: Motors 2: control speed and direction of a DC motor.
- Lesson 6: Sensor inputs 2: distance sensor, ouputs: sound.
- Lesson 7: Outputs: displays (7-segment LED, 16x2 LCD).
- Lesson 8: Putting it all together: build your obstacle-avoiding robot.
