Mei Ho House with The Moonlight Glow Of Intangible Cultural Heritage



Here you can experience a different Mid-Autumn Festival!

 

Through a dynamic series of nostalgic workshops and performances, the scene of festival celebration of the past in Hong Kong can be recreated. The event is also aimed at facilitating the conservation and transmission of ICH items.

 

Afternoon Workshop

 

  • “Paper-Cutting Lantern” Children Workshop

With guidance from the instructor, participating children will learn about the traditional paper-cutting art which is an intangible cultural heritage skill. In the workshop, participants can cut and make use of the festive symbols to design their own unique lanterns.

  • Nostalgic Mid-Autumn Toy Workshop

The former residents of Sham Shui Po will introduce traditional children’s toys from the Mid-Autumn Festivals in reminisce of the old days and teach participants the ways in which they were made. Through oral history and in the form of DIY, participants can acquaint themselves and take part in learning the interesting local history.

Mid-Autumn Night Gathering 

 

  • Puppet Shadow Show

Both shadow play and puppet shows were from Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage. During the Night Gathering, an experienced master of shadow and puppet shows will perform the traditional plays such as “Chang’e Flies to the Moon” to highlight the stories of Mid-Autumn Festival and enable the general public and overseas visitors to gain an understanding of the art form.

  • Nostalgic Food Skill Show

Sugar blowing, “dragon whiskers” candies and “airplane olive” are not only the collective memories of Hong Kong people but are also one of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage. In the Night Gathering, the master of sugar blowing will demonstrate the technique of production. Participants can have a taste of blowing sugar and compete with each other. Through the interactive activity, they can also try throwing the “airplane olive” onto the floors of the revitalized youth hostel as the origin of this kind of snack were closely related to the resettlement blocks in previous years when Mei Ho House was just one of many blocks.
