The purpose of Scholastic Chess is to promote international chess in Hong Kong and to help students to acquire the full spectrum of personal, academic, and societal benefits from playing chess.
On-campus after school chess programs, group and private classes are held at different locations, including Stanley, Repulse Bay, Cyberport, South Horizons, Kennedy Town, Mid-Levels, Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Kowloon Tong, Clear Water Bay, Sai Kung, and Tai Po. There are intensive Summer Chess Camps for players of various strengths. Registration is now open.
The benefits of chess include:
- Raise IQ scores
- Strengthen problem solving skills, teaching how to make difficult and abstract decisions independently
- Enhance reading, memory, language, and mathematical abilities
- Foster critical, creative, and original thinking
- Provide practice at making accurate and fast decisions under time pressure
- Teach how to think logically and efficiently, learning to select the "best" choice from a large number of options
- Demonstrate the importance of flexible planning, concentration, and the consequences of decisions
- Reach men and women regardless of their natural abilities
- Adapted from Dr. Peter Dauvergne, University of Sydney
17 trophies and awards have been awarded to the teams and students coached by Mr. Chui since relocating to Hong Kong in 2012. These include tournaments at the Hong Kong Inter-School Chess Championship 2013, ISF Academy Chess Championship 2013, and Active Kids 4th Annual Scholastic Championship.
