Tea House Chamber Music Series: Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra – A Musical Paintbox

Tea House Chamber Music Series: Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra – A Musical Paintbox

Few ensembles are more colourful than the woodwind quintet. Like a musical paintbox, its rich palette of sound has inspired composers to create lively and evocative works.

This September, the musicians of the HK Phil players present a spirited programme of woodwind melodies from around the world. Works include new arrangements of the much-loved Chinese folk song From Afar and the classic traditional piece Yao’s Dance, as well as contemporary composer Chen Yi’s bright, folk-inspired Woodwind Quintet no. 3 Suite from China West.

Adding an extra touch of colour, the quintet are joined by pianist Rachel Cheung for two pieces – German composer Josef Rheinberger’s elegant and rarely-presented Sextet: Movement I, III and IV, and French composer Francis Poulenc’s Sextet, a demanding and animated work that showcases the performers’ virtuosic skills.

This programme is co-presented by WestK and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
