WORFU

Striving to make public art accessible in North Point and amplify the spirit of the community, WORFU has launched “New North Point”.

The exhibition features graffiti works from four renowned Hong Kong artists, who were invited by WORFU to explore North Point and express their creative interpretation of the district’s evolution. Their works are now on display at WORFU for all to see.

North Point represents a story of evolution, where the old and new come together in one distinct neighbourhood. From its humble beginnings as a remote suburb area a century ago, North Point became an important industrial district; home to the power plant that would provide energy to Hong Kong Island for much of the 20th century. Today, North Point is a frontier of urban re-gentrification, with clusters of residential-cum-commercial buildings and unique cultural sites.

The “New North Point” exhibition at WORFU comes under the new WORFU Art Attack platform. Striving to promote public art in North Point and amplify the spirit of the community, WORFU Art Attack is now driving art events and collaborations with creatives, pioneers and likeminded organizations, as well as supporting local initiatives to make public art accessible to all.
The four acclaimed Hong Kong-based artists contributing to “New North Point” are SINIC, Devil, JAMS and Lousy; together with students from Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI).
SINIC, A full-time artist and promoter for Asian urban street culture projects, said,“All of my artwork for New North Point is inspired by the daily lives of North Point residents and features local elements including the Sunbeam Theatre on King’s Road and a local tram passing the North Point wet market; with overlapping imagery to symbolise the daily grind. I hope it serves as a chance for people to appreciate the normalities of everyday life.”

“I look to remind audiences of the fun and glorious past of North Point, by bringing to life Luna Park – also known as the Great World Playground. By exhibiting cartoon style with bold, thick outlines, my work for New North Point explores the entertainment complex-cum-dismantled theme park and theatre, evoking a time when having fun didn’t involve phones and gadgets,”stated local Hong Kong graffiti and street artist, Devil.
JAMS, a Hong Kong graffiti writer since 2005, said, “North Point is a cultural hub and centre for a huge number of local artists to gather inspiration from. My artwork entitled ‘NORTH’ pays homage to the iconic features of North Point and through the use of the colour blue it salutes the coastline of North Point, reminding everyone that there is something for everyone in North Point.”
Projecting good vibes through his signature neon colours and captivating strokes, Lousy has created a modern mash-up of North Point staples. He commented, “From the former State Theatre to traditional floral embroidery patterns, my New North Point work symbolises mixing old and new together to creative harmony and prosperity for the future of North Point.”
Joshua Roberts, Project Officer, DESIS Lab of HKDI said, “In the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives it is easy to overlook the simple delights of appreciating a fantastic piece of artwork. With the launch of WORFU Art Attack, we look forward to providing a platform for artists to showcase their work. In addition to being a place for people to take time out of their day to relax and enjoy spectacular artwork.”

Everyone in Hong Kong is invited to come and see “New North Point” at WORFU, ongoing from now.
