Visit Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden and learn all about Northern Red Muntjac (Muntiacus vaginalis) - Male.
Where to spot: Across the hillside, often seen near Signpost Corner
The Northern Red Muntjac is a shy animal. It is usually most active at dawn and dusk. It calls like a barking dog, mainly when sensing a predator, and courtship.
The male has small antlers while the female does not, they have only tufts of bristly hair on a small bony stalk. Both have tusk-like canine teeth which are used for defence and in territorial disputes. Its common predators are stray dogs and the Burmese Python.
