The Rattan Chair Upcycling Project

Local artists will be transforming old rattan chairs, a familiar sight in the homes of the ‘60s and ‘70s, into upcycled furniture creations as part of ‘The Rattan Chair Upcycling Project’. A section of the street will be turned into a makeshift art space during this time, with local artists working on their craft and interacting with visitors.
Hokkien Architecture: form Thian Hock Keng to Lim Loh House
Leveraging on the visual association with Thian Hock Keng Temple, this site-specific exhibition will highlight similarities between this predominant Hokkien temple in Singapore and the ancestral houses in Nan'an built by Towkay Lim Loh (Major-General Lim Bo Seng's father). This exhibition also provides vignettes to the little-known family lives of Major-General Lim Bo Seng and pieces together a richer picture of one of Singapore’s well-known martyrs. Organised by the Department of Architecture at National University of Singapore, and supported by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, Thian Hock Keng, and URA as part of Architectural Heritage Season.

Thian Hock Keng is one of Singapore’s oldest and most important temples for immigrants from southern China’s Fujian province. Completed in 1842 and standing on what used to be the shoreline, it is dedicated to the worship of Ma Zu Po, the Goddess of the Sea. The national monument received the 2001 Architectural Heritage Award and an Honorable Mention in the 2001 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award. Free volunteer-led guided tours are available at regular intervals.
Singapore Yu Huang Gong Open House

Established in 1831, the Former Keng Teck Whay Building is now home to the Taoist temple, Singapore Yu Huang Gong (玉皇宫). Gazetted as a national monument in 1973, the temple building features beautifully preserved elements like the curved roof ridges with upturned ‘swallow tail’ sweeps on the ends, characteristic of the traditional Hokkien style. Once home to one of Singapore’s oldest self-help organisations, the building stands witness to the presence and contributions of the Hokkien Peranakans (Straits Chinese) in colonial Singapore. Come visit the monument, which will be open for visits.

Traditional Islamic Music Concert

Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre is holding an Islamic cultural music concert ‘Remembrance of the Legend Nagore E M Hanifah’ (1925 – 2015). Mr Hanifah's stentorian voice, music and lyrics captured the hearts of thousands of people around the world and contributed significantly to the Indian music industry for almost four decades. He will be remembered through his acclaimed Islamic songs performed live by guest singers Mr Farihullah and Mr Sultan accompanied by veteran musicians from ‘Mr Ilias and Team’ in a soul stirring cultural rendition. Admission is free.

Longest Spice Line and Curator's Tour at Nagore Dargah

Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre (NDIMHC) is attempting the longest Spice line Singapore Book Of Records on the 26th October 2019 at 2.30pm. NDIMHC with its SBOR attempt on the 'Longest Spice Line' hopes to create awareness of spices and bring to the fore how spices have been an integral part of our lives. Docents will be present at the new spice gallery to host and provide guided tours for visitors coming in before and during car-free road closure timing.

Come by Yu Huang Gong to enjoy a beautiful time of savouring different varieties of Chinese Tea in the temple surrounds. While sampling the tea, have a conversation with the Abbot to learn more about the history and heritage of the monument.

Traditional Yangge Performance

Yangge (秧歌) is a traditional Chinese folk dance accompanied by drums and colourful fans. Come to Telok Ayer Square to join the Yangge troupe in an exuberant performance and learn more about this traditional art form.
Outdoor Film Screening: China Wife

Enjoy a night under the stars in an open-air ‘cinema’ with this classic Cantonese film. ‘China Wife’ is part of the Nanyang Trilogy, a series of three Cantonese-language films produced by the Kong Ngee Company in 1957. The film has been restored by the Asian Film Archives and features some familiar landmarks and scenes of 1950s Singapore, which you may recognise. No pre-registration required.
Blast from the Past by Singapore Polytechnik

A team of Singapore Polytechnic students goes nostalgic as they transform Amoy Street into an old school playground featuring traditional games such as chapteh, tic-tac-toe, five stones and hopscotch. Take a walk down memory lane by playing these childhood games or head to Telok Ayer Street to enjoy ‘live’ performances by Singapore Polytechnic’s Garage Band, which will be serenading the crowd through the night. Be there to support these young talents of Singapore who are performing at Car-Free Weekend for the first time!
Frasers Tower Pop-Up Market

Pop-up market curator W Market will be transforming the Frasers Tower driveway into a pop-up market offering DIY craft workshops, free-play life-sized board games, and crafts for sale. Meet the team from Happiness Initiative, a Singapore-based company that promotes happiness and well-being, as they host a film screening of A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. The1hr 15minfilm features motivational speaker Lizzie Velasquez’s journey from being bullied and dubbed “the ugliest woman in the word” to her fight back as an anti-bullying activist.There will also be live performances by busking artists The Unemployed and Ralph Alvern, and visitors can also buy food and beverages from Telok Ayer merchants.
Heritage Trishaw Rides with Cycling without Age

Experience wind in your hair while traversing through the car-free streets around Telok Ayer in custom-built trishaws powered by non-profit organisation, Cycling Without Age Singapore. The trishaw rides are free for all, and priority will be given tothose who are less mobile, in particular the elderly, and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

ACM After Dark: Tales form Beyond

Inspired by the famous Chinese book, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, step into this fantastical world and creatures in this one-night-only Halloween special. Get spooked by chilling performances and paranormal panellist talks, or go on our first ever adults-only immersive experiential storytelling in the dark. Make your own wicked awesome souvenir or have your fortunes drawn by local illustrators. You might just find your new favourite haunting ground.
Heritage Film Tour: Traversing Downtown Singapore through Film by Hun Ping

Experience old feature films of places and buildings in downtown Singapore as they were. Tour participants will get to watch film clips from decades ago, pore over old maps and pick up little histories of this perpetually transforming city through their smartphones on whatsapp. Tour leader, Hun Ping (aka sgfilmhunter), will upload film clips and make them available for online viewing at the stops during the tour (via Youtube). SCC Football Youth Tournament and Carnival in Support of Sportcares

Festivities start early before the road closures with the SCC Football Carnival - the final event of SCC’s Bicentennial celebrations. Featuring a children’s football clinic by Chelsea Football Club International Development Centre (CFCIDC) and an under-14 seven-a-side mini football tournament for SportCares teams, the event is open to SCC members, guests and members of the public.

Nagore Dargah Open House and Curator's Tour

Go on a special curator’s tour, which takes participants through the ‘Singapore to Singaporean – Pioneers and Descendants’ photo exhibition and the new Spice gallery. The exhibition displays the personal photos of 100 modern-day Singaporeans who responded to a submission call, matched with the black-and-white portraits of their pioneering grandparents or great-grandparents who set foot on this land during the maritime era (pre-1965). Thian Hock Keng is one of Singapore’s oldest and most important temples for immigrants from southern China’s Fujian province. Completed in 1842 and standing on what used to be the shoreline, it is dedicated to the worship of Ma Zu Po, the
Goddess of the Sea. While most of the building materials came from China, the temple incorporated cast-iron railings from Scotland and tiles from England and Holland. It was gazetted as a National Monument in 1973. The restoration project received
the 2001 Architectural Heritage Award and an Honorable Mention in the 2001 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award.
Volunteers will be conducting temple tours at regular intervals. To join a guided tour, please meet at the entrance of the temple.

Singapore is home to some of the world’s most precious wildlife, including the pangolin, hawksbill turtle and sambar deer. But what should you do if you encounter them in our nature reserves? Discover fun facts about these animals through this interactive community art activity, which involves weaving coloured strings over line drawings of these animals to form colourful pictures on our car-free street! The activity is organised by students pursuing Environmental Studies at National University of Singapore, who are returning to Car-free Weekend for the second time this year, to share their love for our natural heritage.

Thian Hock Keng Mural
Commissioned by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan and painted by artist Yip Yew Chong, the heritage mural for Thian Hock Keng depicts the voyage of the early Hokkien immigrants with a focus on their early lives when they settled in Telok Ayer and Amoy Street, their tenacity and resilience, and their contribution towards Singapore’s nation building.

Life and Soul: Historic Places of Worship in Telok Ayer

To commemorate the Singapore Bicentennial, Singapore Heritage Society (SHS) is conducting a four-part walking workshop series based on a research project on 21 historic places of worship in Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar, and Tanjong Malang. The second-part is a three-hour walking workshop in Telok Ayer, conducted by SHS researchers. It focuses on how six places of worship stay relevant and add to the vibrancy of modern Singapore. The trail covers Fuk Tak Chi Museum, Ying Fo Fui Kun, Nagore Dargah, Singapore Yu Huang Gong, Masjid Al Abrar, and Thian Hock Keng temple. This project is supported by the National Integration Council, National Heritage Board, Our SG Fund, Urban Redevelopment Authority, and Singapore Bicentennial Committee.
Pioneer Trial along Ann Siang Hill and Telok Ayer Green by NParks

Learn about the trade and ways of life of Singapore’s early immigrants in this walking trail in a quiet enclave amid the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. Visit places of worship and old shop houses built in the 1800s. Spice up your walk with a close look at interesting fruit and spice trees planted along the way and visit the old well at the foot of Ann Siang Hill.

Celebrate the joys of cycling at the 2nd Move Happy Cycling Festival, organised by the Land Transport Authority! Key highlights of the event include:
- The 5KM Treasure Hunter – Follow clues and uncover places of interest along the Car-Free Sunday route to earn yourself an exclusive ride pack.
- Cycling-themed Game Booths – Complete five games and redeem a free goodie bag.
- Cycling Circuits – Put your cycling skills to the test at fun and exciting courses such as the “Snail Race” and “The Odyssey”.
- Kids’ Balance Bike Tryout Zones – Suitable for kids from 2 years old, bring your little ones to try out balance bikes in a safe and fun mini circuit. For kids at higher cycling proficiency levels, they can also check out a mini pump track sponsored by Ngee Ann City.

Community Trishaw Rides

Here’s a chance for the less mobile, in particular the elderly, to experience wind in their hair along the car-free route, in trishaws powered by volunteers! This initiative is funded by cycling enthusiast and founder of Jolly Riders Mr Han Jok Kwang. Participants can choose to get a ride from volunteers to take in the sights of the city, or choose to operate the trishaw personally to ferry their elderly family members or friends. Priority will be given to those who are less mobile, in particular the elderly, and on a first-come, first-served basis.
VCH Atrium Performances: Symphony in the City

Enjoy your morning at the Victoria Concert Hall Atrium with music performed by talented musicians.
